We’ve heard the rumors, but now The Stranger says it has confirmed that Ballard’s Sunset Bowl is closing its doors after 51 years. As most Ballard residents know, Sunset Bowl is nothing less than a neighborhood institution and one of the last bowling alleys in the city. “We’ve been sold,” said General Manager Berl Lowry. “I don’t know who the new owners are.” There are plenty of rumors flying about that, of course. “I was just informed that they have sold Sunset Bowl to developers who will, undoubtedly turn it into just another soulless condo stack,” writes Michele on Yelp. “They are trying to strip the soul and culture from Ballard one block at a time.” We’ll keep updating My Ballard as we learn more…

I have a lot of great memories of Sunset Bowl and I will be sad to see it go, however it was Sunset’s decision to sell no one forced them to so that they could “strip the soul and culture from Ballard.” I wish there were something we could do to save it, but if the owner doesn’t want it then there is really nothing we can do.

For $13.1 million, wouldn’t you sell?
