The group “Documentation and Conservation of the Modern Movement in Western Washington” is holding a community meeting tonight (Wednesday) at the Ballard Library to discuss efforts to save the Denny’s on 15th and Market. Keep in mind this is not the official city meeting to decide whether to designate the Denny’s as a city landmark. That meeting is on Feb. 20th.

This is the most foolish cause I have seen in years. The building is hideous looking, and holds virtually no value other than sentimental. Instead, it has become a cause celeb for those that oppose development of Ballard. Such an effort flies in the face of growth management, and the City’s urban planning whereby the zoning codes were set to encourage this type of development in Ballard. Not to mention the environmental benefits of urban multi-dwelling housing. Would those that oppose the development of Ballard prefer the alternative, which is uncontrolled urban sprawl?
Unless the “Denny’s” building is developed, it will become a blighted corner on an otherwise wonderful area to live. Instead of that corner being a recognized entry point to Ballard — as argued by the “movement” — it will be an embarassment.
