Frelard, Freelard or Balmont?

Posted by Geeky Swedes on March 5th, 2008

We’ve seen all three names to designate the neighborhood between Ballard and Fremont, and we’re thoroughly confused. Can anyone help? Let’s air out the evidence and get this settled once and for all…

    i prefer Frellard

I think Balmont is on the rail in the fourth race.

I don't know about Ballard, but the boundries of Fremont are Stone Way N to 8th Avenue NW and 50th Street N to the canal. I would think that anything West of 8th would then be Ballard, yes?

I always thought it was "the Fremont-Ballard Industrial Zone," but I always thought of it as Frelard.

People advertising rentals on Craigslist call it Ballard, which I guess means that Ballard has a higher name recognition as a place to live at the moment.

I always refer to that area as FreBall.

Frelard. The lard makes it funny, and but if you spell it with the double 'ee' it's trying too hard. Balmont sounds like a housing development in Redmond. Oh wait, that would be Balmont ESTATES, right? My bad.

What is this Fremont of which you speak? It's all Ballard.
  • Rolf
My personal favorite is Frelard. And I went to West Woodland Elementary, so I'll reserve that name for the school, not the neighborhood.
  • Balmont for sure. I don't like the LARD in FreLard.

In response to that map Matt linked, does anyone refer to downtown Ballard and the surrounding area as Adams? I've never heard it. That map almost seems like an elementary school zone map, except there isn't a sunset hill elementary to my knowledge.

The sign as you turn off of 8th onto Leary says "Welcome to Fremont"

Belmont is a trendy stop on the red line in chicago. I'll continually think someone is talking about chicago with that term. Frelard is best of the group

The fact that it's a combination name of 2 other places is a clear indication that it's not it's own place. I agree, it's a joke name. But to the extent that I refer to it, I'd always go with fre or free (just to emphasize the pronunciation), not Balmont. Balmont sounds too much like someone's name (i.e. "Who" are you talking about? Not "where".)

Frelard, but yeah - it's just a joke term. I've never heard anyone use it seriously.
  • The "official" name is apparently "West Woodland." How boring.

    That's for elementary schools :)

Frelard is what I have most commonly heard, and I am a resident of the area. However I agree with Brian because I don't use the term.
  • Also: who cares

Wikipedia has it as Frelard. Balmont is a Russian poet.
