Take one cell phone in the morning…

Posted by Dale on March 19th, 2008

This is one use of the of the HIPAA medical privacy rules that I can get behind. At the Ballard Bartell’s pharmacy counter, there’s a sign that reads:

My pharmacist said it’s helped cut down on the number of people yakking away on their phones while the counter help is trying to serve them. “Sometimes it gets out of control around here.”

I'd just be happy if they'd hang up when they're checking out at the grocery store. The checkers have to already feel under appreciated as it is without having to get the attention of someone having a "...like, whatever. And then she said..." conversation on their phone.

Why do we need rules and regulations to make people do the right things? People can be so rude with their cell phones and in many other ways; are they unaware of the people around them? Seattle is a polite place, but we still have room for improvement. Don't you hate the shoppers at the market walking up and down the aisles just chatting away on their bluetooth!

Wouldn't it be nice if we could throw that HIPAA privacy rule into other parts of our lives?

"Excuse me sir, I'm eating dinner. To comply with HIPAA regulations I'll need you to finish your call."
