Keeping you on top of the Denny’s story

Posted by Geeky Swedes on March 20th, 2008

An update on the continuing debate over the old Ballard Denny’s building. Tomorrow (Friday) at 9:30 a.m., a Seattle City Council committee will hear a report from the city’s preservation chief. While that may sound like business as usual, there may be a little fireworks from attendees who feel Seattle’s Landmarks Preservation board is overstepping its bounds, reports Crosscut’s Knute Berger. Oh, and the Associated Press just published a new story on the Denny’s controversy, which appeared on Yahoo News’ home page, but it really doesn’t break any new ground. (Thanks Ronan for the link!)

Why not turn the Denny's into a bowling alley?

Tear it down! Who needs a 'working class' monument in our neighborhood? Haven't all the working class had moved to Renton by now?

"the people who might gain financially from a resolution that is in their favor."

You mean us, the poor homeowners? AKA 'peopel who live in Ballard'?

I want to comment on the ridiculous article put out by the AP...it was not well researched, in fact, it was obviously done by reading most of the other articles that have been put forth on the Ballard Manning's to date. And again, the author weighed in on 'why would anyone want to landmark a Denny's'. It's NOT a Denny's people, and to the degree that the pr person for Benaroya has been trumpeting that minor flaw in the building's history, they've been successful. The AP article did not cite any new developments, nor did it offer any new information. The fact that benaroya has taken a cursory look at the alternate plan, and has not bothered to allow it past that cursory look, proves that they are stubborn and NOT wanting to work with the people of Ballard and it's community, but rather, slow this down, claim economic hardship (brought about by their own doing), and attempt to bully the community and the city through a lawsuit. Many Ballardites ARE passionate about the outcome, but are waiting to see how things work out through the process. Also, we have become a society of soundbite news, therefore, if something isn't shocking for 30 seconds, we 'lose passion' for it's outcome. I do agree, however, with the interest on the part of the people who might gain financially from a resolution that is in their favor. Stay tuned....it will be back in the news....

The lack of conversation here makes me think that we Ballardites are not particularly passionate about the outcome. The big interest in the subject seems to be those who will gain financially from a particular resolution. Interesting!
