Your neighborhood’s best restaurants

Posted by Geeky Swedes on April 27th, 2008

The Seattle Weekly has published a special issue, “The 100 Best Restaurants,” and Ballard has four on the list: Volterra, La Carta de Oaxaca, Ocho and La Isla. Only four? For a neighborhood the size of Ballard, you might expect more representation. Meanwhile, Fremont has six restaurants in the top 100: 35th Street Bistro, Paseo, Brouwers, Elemental@Gasworks, Chiso and Brad’s Swingside Cafe. Phinney Ridge has the 74th St. Alehouse and Red Mill Burgers.

With all the interest in restaurants from My Ballard readers, we’ve launched a new section that features many of Ballard’s best restaurants — with your ratings and reviews. We’ll be adding new restaurants over the next several days (and we’ll expand soon to Fremont and Phinney, too). Meanwhile, please let us know what you think about some of the restaurants on the list.

I don't think Le Gourmand advertises w/ the Seattle Weekly? Maybe that's why they didn't make it - w/out them on it, the list simply doesn't have much credibility.

way to go 35th st. bistro - great place too!

I agree with La Carta (what I remember of it, it's impossible to get a seat nowadays) and Volterra, but I think Ocho is still too green to be on that list. If it's still holding up next year then by all means include it, but until then I say the jury is out. I am also out....on the sidewalk - because just like La Carta it's now impossible to get a seat at Ocho.

La Isla is a tough one. I lived down in the Caribbean for a long time and although the food at La Isla is good, it isn't traditional PR food. I'll go out on a limb and say that traditional PR food isn't very good to begin with, so maybe making it work gives them enough points to be on the list.

As for places not included...The Dish comes to mind. Although, again the lines are too long. Le Gourmand, as others pointed out. India Bistro. If they're going to break them out into those annoying categories, then I'd throw the Other Coast in there too. Under "Circus".

That's it. I'm making the Mr. take me on a date night to le Gourmand. We've always driven by but haven't gone in.

le gourmand is just excellent (I wish I had the money to go there more often).

How can "India Bistro" not be on the Ballard's best restaurants list?

+1 on the great idea. As far as the top 100 restaurants without le gourmand making the list, all I can say is Wha? Yeah I have only been there twice because it costs as much as a small island, but that is some damn fine food.
  • Thanks! That's the plan...
  • Great idea! Are you adding coffee shops and bars, too?
