The building that houses Val’s Cafe and The Daily Planet antique shop on Phinney Ave. near 60th is slated for demolition, reports the North Seattle Herald-Outlook. “If all of our small businesses go, it’ll just be dullsville,” said Cecile Andrews, the founder of Ecovillage, a neighborhood group dedicated to preserving the small-town feel of Phinney.

Wow. And the building down the street with Ken’s Market and the Couth Buzzard bookstore is going to be demolished, too. Pretty soon that road is going to be a concrete canyon.

I thought Ken’s was expanding into the Couth Buzzard space? (I was told they own the entire building.)

But what about Chef Liao??? Wife might not like him, but I love the food there… =(

Possibly I misread the posted statement. These days every “Land Use Action” poster I see just reads “Condos coming”. :-)

The Daily Planet??? nooooo- Those guys are awesome! Did ALL my Christmas shopping there two years ago! Only bad thing- they’re hardly ever open when working people are home… :(

Ah, crap! That truly sucks. I love Val’s, have for years, but have not been for a while. Will it be closing, then?
Never made it to Daily Planet, but have always intended to. Time to make time.

Too bad. Val’s made a damn fine hamburger.

Bella, Ken’s is still planning on expanding as per today’s PI article: http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/361292_market01.html

I thought so. I work right up the street, and we have a couple of customers who work there. I hadn’t asked about it in a while, but I’d be really surprised if Ken’s had changed their plans and we hadn’t heard about it.

Any word about how this affects Chef Liao?

When I read the Ken’s posting, it only refered to an on grade addition, and some offices up one story at the back of the building. (Making the whole thing 2 stories).

Holy crap, that would be fantastic. The “Daily Planet” and Val’s are both, frankly, pretty much much a waste of space.
But Chef Liao is a fucking treasure. Hands off.

Let me guess: Something “new and unique.” “Luxury” condos or lofts over tanning salons, nail salons and cell phone stores.
All this with fewer parking spaces than units.
