‘The Stepping Stone’ opens on 24th

Posted by Geeky Swedes on May 9th, 2008

The new bar The Stepping Stone celebrated its “soft opening” Friday night on 24th Ave. near 59th St., just a few doors down from Cafe Besalu. A two-piece jazz band provided the background tunes while dozens of friends and curious neighbors stopped by to take a look around.

The menu, while still in its early stages, features a few wines, beer and sake. Similar to The Dray, The Stepping Stone features some very cool wood furnishings, but with a focus on sustainability. The bar top, for example, originated from a Ballard warehouse. The benches and foot rest at the bar are made from bleacher wood that came from a school in Oregon. And the cool walnut table tops were cut from naturally fallen trees. All in all, another cool addition to the Ballard neighborhood.

It's still early, but to me the Stepping Stone has the makings of the quintessential neighborhood watering hole. Nothing fancy, but a very friendly vibe, good service, and an attempt to offer some interesting beverage choices.
  • I too was there last night but before the music started up. I know it is a soft opening so I am going to refrain from criticism. I enjoyed a frosty brew. Mmmmmm. All I will say is that with many serious contenders in the vicinity such as Copper Gate, KISS Cafe, King's Hardware, Hazelwood, Portalis, and The Dray (to name only a few) they are going to have to find a niche and solid following. There are lots of people doing local brews, local wines and local liquors.
