Farewell Googie

As we first reported last night, the old Manning’s Cafeteria and Denny’s building on 15th and Market will soon be demolished after the Seattle Landmarks and Preservation Board ruled it’s not financially feasible for the owners to preserve it. Here is some of the media coverage out this morning:

Seattle Times: Board gives owner OK to tear down Ballard Denny’s
Crosscut: The case of the doomed diner
Seattle PI: Landmark status can’t preserve Ballard Denny’s
KING 5: Ballard’s old Denny’s headed for demolition

I think we said goodbye to the building above twenty years ago? And fyi: building will likely be apartments.

I've only lived in Ballard for three years now and I understand why some people disliked the Denny's building...I did at first.
Then as the years went on with many nights with my friends going to one of the very few places in town that was open 24 hours and after numerous amounts of directions given over the telephone "Take a left at that weird looking building"...I think people have forgotten the role it has played in all our lives.
Only three years, but this news brings a tear to my eyes because I just thought more Ballardians would care...or at least respect its significance.
The Ballard Gateway will be no more just a Safeway, a couple gas stations, the Walgreens, and condos.
  • I'm with Stephen Lee..."I need a drink."

Kara Ballardians do care. That's why the majority want the thing gone. Saving a hideous building for out of towners? I think the permanent residents should come first. Whatever goes up will look infinitely better than the other three blocks at the intersection.

People calling it "hideous" are grossly overreacting - that's just silly and if your idea of high culture is huge condo buildings everywhere you look, I do wish that you would get out of town.

But going all the way over to the other side of the spectrum of "historic landmark"?? That also seems quite extreme.

The majority of people that I know would fall in the mid range - unlike yuppie elitists, they don't consider it "hideous", it has some character but not "historic landmark" level of significance.

It's not so much the building itself going away that is annoying, but rather having another massive condo construction in its place is not appealing - that seems to me to be what the majority thinks (or should think according to me anyway! :)

Yeah, God forbidden this out of towner is trying to save everything in Ballard and I'm not even from here....what is up with that.
  • Joshua
The really funny thing is the plan to sell condos is actually slated to lose $10 million given the current occupancy rate. Good luck guys!

Can you guarantee that Biff? Can you guarantee that whatever goes there will be infinitely better than the rest of the block? Have you looked around at ALL the new construction around Seattle? The cookie cutter, perfectly square, concrete uglies that are shooting up like rockets making ALL the quirky neighbourhoods in this city look commonplace and boring?

Or is it like Michael said, the cookie cutter ugly IS your idea of better? Hmmm. Sad.

I'm not against progress....and maybe the infrastructure of the old Denny's building is compromised and should be torn down, that makes sense even as it makes me sad to see it go. I spent MANYyears there (and Sunset Bowl), what makes me even sadder still is the concrete ugliness I'm 99% sure will take it's place.

Why be a little creative and individualistic, when we can take the easy way out and look just like eveyone else.
  • WILL THE LAST ONE TO LEAVE SEATTLE, PLEASE TURN OUT THE LIGHTS THANK YOU! The party is over.... and so is the music!

I was born and raised in seattle... I spent some time with my Grandparents and Friends at this Denny's I was there when it was Mannings too!

Funny it all began with the stupid idea of the monorail going in, they bought the Denny's first.. the people in the monorail comission should die in a horrible fire with the building, then the benaroya folks too, how many more landmarks will we loose before seattle just goes up in a puff of dollars!
