Nau no more, Mooberry coming to Fremont

July 3rd, 2008 · 67 Comments

Back in March we wrote about Nau, a socially-conscious boutique going into the old Sonic Boom location in Fremont. Well, Nau has ceased operations due to a lack of funding and sold to another clothing retailer.

Instead, Mooberry will go into the south half of the old Sonic Boom space — to the right of the photo above — and the north half is still available. (Thanks Patricia for letting us know about Nau!)

I saw the Mooberry banner hanging at the space last week and thought “Great, just what the neighborhood needs: a crappy corporate smoothie franchise!”

Seems like the exact opposite of what the Sonic Boom owners told us would occupy the space.

Nau has gone out of business (the entire company). Happened about 6 weeks ago or so. They announced their closing and had a huge sale on their website 50% off and sales final. They were bought by another company and supposedly in August the company will be coming back in a new form (with these new owners). But Nau as we knew it is gone.

Their website has more information. www.nau.com.

Franchise = locally owned and operated. I’ll take that in lieu of over-priced clothes that can only be worn on weekends in the summer- any day of the week.

“Seems like the exact opposite of what the Sonic Boom owners told us would occupy the space.”

    I guess they’re running a business not a charity.

    “over-priced clothes”

How can clothes be overpriced? There must be some people who buy them, maybe just not you?

There’s a Mooberry in ballard now, and corporate or not, it’s pretty tasty. More adult-flavored stuff (in my opinion) than cold stone sloppery.

  • 6 Larsen // Jul 3, 2008 at 11:12 am

    Caffinator - define “adult-flavored” — can I get a martini smoothie?

  • 7 randi // Jul 3, 2008 at 11:37 am

im excited…fremont doesnt need more rip-off boutiques. moberry cannot compare to the gelato place though!

  • 8 CaffinatorX // Jul 3, 2008 at 3:42 pm

I dunno… “adult flavored” means that the frozen yoghurt is kind of lemony and tart rather than ultra-sugary and creamy. Not to knock ice-cream, but it’s a nice difference.
I think you can get a martini smoothie at Matador. ha ha ha ha

I saw the sign the other day and wondering what happened. I liked some of the Nau stuff but it’s expensive and weird.

  • 10 biff // Jul 4, 2008 at 11:34 am

actually suthi if they go out of business nobody is buying them -hence the term overpriced. They were $20 more expensive than lulu which sells like hotcakes (and still quite expensive) at the uvillage.

  • 11 Heather // Jul 4, 2008 at 5:09 pm

Lmfao @ Mooberry being a ‘crappy smoothie franchise,’ Nice cynicism there, Brian!…

  • 12 Suthii // Jul 5, 2008 at 8:46 am

    “nobody is buying them”

Nobody? Actually just not enough people. A few more years, and a few more yuppies in Seattle, and hopefully I can enjoy more over priced clothing shops and not Gap/Old Navy cr*p.

  • 13 Suthii // Jul 5, 2008 at 8:48 am

    “nobody is buying them”

And actually is wasn’t referring to a market over saturated with high end clothing shops, she was referring to things she couldn’t afford and therefore didn’t like.

  • 14 Kitty // Jul 15, 2008 at 2:02 pm

Actually, Brian, Mooberry is owned by a local family.

If you fail to plan for competitive pressure, you risk falling into the gas-station-price-war mentality. The cinema is not an art which films life: the cinema is something between art and life. Unlike painting and literature, the cinema both gives to life and takes from it, and I try to render this concept in my films. Literature and painting both exist as art from the very start; the cinema doesn’t.Jean-LucGodardJean-Luc Godard
