Sushi showdown in Old Ballard

July 7th, 2008 · 11 Comments

Just a day after we posted the story about Shiku Sushi moving into DiVino’s on Ballard Ave., we learn that Moshi Moshi Sushi is moving into the ground floor of the new senior housing building just a half block away.

Sushi lovers, rejoice! If you’re curious, this is the place that Ballard Gossip Girl has been vaguely talking about recently.

    Taste tests - Hurray!

Spicy tuna handrolls and spider rolls = who will win my business?!

The first tenant of the new commercial storefront area has been announced. A sushi place makes sense. Now, the question is - who’s the next tenant going to be along this new strip of commercial units?

The more sushi, the better! If Ballard can handle the Matador and La Carta de Oaxaca being within spitting distance of each other, I think we can handle two sushi restaurants being so close.

Yeah but Matador and La Carta are distinctively different menus, Matador is hardly Mexican much less Oaxacan. It’s apples to oranges…..

    Bring it.

M- I agree! In fact, I hestitate to necessarily even categorize Matador as Mexican. I think the last time I was there, they had something along the lines of a “Santa Fe spring roll”? A little too much fusion for me, thanks! Good, but yes, much different than La Carta. I also agree, the more the better. I fear for the place up on 15th.

BTW I love the headline “Sushi Showdown”. It conjurs up a picture of a couple of sushi chefs with 6-shooters, facing off.

“Nori? We don’t need no stinkin’ Nori!”.

Is Moshi Moshi a chain? It looks like there are many restaurants with that name in other cities. Also, isn’t that a Chinese stereotype on the picture instead of a Japanese stereotype?

I think moshi moshi is just a popular albeit unoriginal name for a sushi joint. Rumor has it that Moshi’s head sushi guy is a 5 year disciple of Shiro. Sounds good to me. Any other info on the DiVino Sushi place or do we just wait for a “That’s How I Roll”?

I’m with Jasmine. You can never have too much sushi. In Fremont, Blue C & Chiso’s are just a stone’s throw from one another, and both seem to be doing well. People will just naturally gravitate to the sushi joint that jives best with their individual vibe; there’s enough to go around!
