Bike rack brings back Googie

Posted by Geeky Swedes on July 12th, 2008

Sustainable Ballard is holding a bike rack design contest, and the winner will be announced during the Ballard Seafood Fest later this month. Take a look at this entry. “This rack design serves to enshrine the memory of an old Googie icon in the new Ballard,” writes Crosscut’s Knute Berger. “Suggested location: 15th Avenue Northwest and Northwest Market Street.”

That is unbelievably funny... and actually quite attractive. One vote YES!

As cute and architecturally relevant as it may be, it's not a very practical bike rack. Too much useless space in the middle. Add some vertical members.

    But I get it...so kudos.

    Haha! They should do it!

I see this design being another failed attempt at art because someone forgot to look at it from every angle.

Rotate the structure in your head...

They should use the decorative structure for the ends (so two of those) with the bike tire slots win between. Metal, thinner, and not as wide. Just sort of a hint of googie.
