Honore Bakery to open Saturday

Posted by Geeky Swedes on July 16th, 2008

Locks Fan sent us an email today saying that Honore Bakery on 70th (that we wrote about back in May) is close to opening. We went by there this afternoon and sure enough, they said they’re hoping to open on Saturday.

The dark brown furniture is in place, white plates are on the shelves and the cash register is ready. When we walked in, the pastry chef was whipping up some sort of chocolate morsels that smelled delicious! The baker told Locks Fan that he would be selling croissants, brioche and puff pastry treats. There was also a stack of Pierre Herme cookbooks for all you chocoholics out there.

  • You can never have too many croissant shops!

Death to Wonder Bread! Hail to baguettes and croissants washed down with $4 coffee!
  • SeattleRichardson
Where is this place on 70th? Address or map anyone? Thanks
  • Suthii
70th, one block east of 15th ave..........

"Je prend deux chocolat, trois croissants, un baguette et un cafe a quatre dollars, s’il vous plaît"
  • boardbrown
Don't knock Wonder Bread. It's a great plumbing tool.
  • Suthii
    "Don’t knock Wonder Bread"

It's a wonder they call it bread.........

I hope this place has nice chewy baguettes with a tough, crunchy crust like you can find on the real Rue St Honoré. None of this soft, bland breads designed for folks with dentures you find too often.
  • Kiki
Suthii, it seems all you do is complain. Not a criticism just an observation.
  • Suthii
"Suthii, it seems all you do is complain."

Jeez, I can't complain about Wonder Bread? Don't want to hurt it's aficionado' feelings?
  • Kiki
Didn't say you complain about Wonderbread. You complain about everything.
  • Joel Niemeeyr
Actually, this is one of the few times Suthii does not seem to be doing the troll thing and is saying something I actually agree with. I am no francophile (not that there's anything wrong with that!), but I certainly appreciate good bread, and loathe the bad stuff. If I wasnt' doing this damn Atkins things, a croissant would be great! YUM!
  • Jasmine
I'm really looking forward to some good, fresh bread. This is walking distance from my house so I'm sure we'll be heading over there a couple times a week!
  • Locks Fan
Hey, nothing wrong with GOOD bread and pastries. I endured decades of Ho-hos and similar, immortalizing, non-perishable yuck fests. (The baked equivalent of cockroaches, the ilk of the Twinkie would survive nuclear blasts.) Bring on hand-crafted flaky, buttery goodness any day!
  • SeattleRichardson
I'm with Suthii here...French bread can't be beat. No fillers, preservatives, High Fructose Corn Syrup, etc.

Please feel free to call me a Francophile...I'll gladly except it.

Now if we can just get a decent "French" Macaroon in Ballard!

    See here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macaron
  • SeattleRichardson
    errrr.... "accept" it.
  • Suthii
    "You complain about everything."

I just wrote that I love good bread and pastries...guess you missed that part.

    "“French” Macaroon"

Best place for those is sadly still Paris.
  • boardbrown
Suthii (or anyone else craving good stuff), surely you've checked out Besalu on 24th?
The macaroons there are amazing, but the line is long. Maybe this new place will relieve some of the pressure.

Anyone who has ever done any do-it-yourself plumbing knows that one of the most annoying problems is when water infiltrates your solder. Next time, take a slice of Wonder Bread, tear off the crust, and scrunch what's left of the slice into a small ball. Shove the ball up the pipe towards the water source. The bread will hold back the water long enough to solder the pipe, but totally disintegrate w/in an hour and come out your faucet in liquid form.

So Wonder Bread has it's good points.
  • Joel Niemeeyr
Ha! I have never had one of those macarons, but heaven knows I have read about them! Ladure is the reason I want to go to Paris! I asked a friend once to bring some back from Paris for me, which he did. They last as far as New York.

I have heard you can get them at Bakery Nouveau in West Seattle, but I have never seen them there. I would seriously take an Atkins break and buy a bunch to share with this group if I could find some!
  • Joel Niemeyer
In fact, I'm so worked up about it now, I can't even spell my damn name!
  • SeattleRichardson
Cafe Besalu is a god send to Ballard and to Seattle and so I'm hoping that this new place will give them some needed competition and maybe draw the lines down at Besalu some....the weekend crowds there are crazy, YIKES!

Right when I returned from Paris I was shopping at Whole Foods and saw the French Macarons and bought them right then and there....unfortunately I was disappointed. They weren't even in the same ball park. However, I will say that Le Panier in Pike Place has really good French Macaroons...not to say they can compare with the ones in France but they are very good! I've heard Nouveau was good but haven't made it there yet.

Can anyone here voutch for an authentic (anything close to France) Baguette? I've yet to find one in Seattle....

FYI...just throwing this out there but if anyone wants to see a really neat foodie "French" Food Blog go to http://www.frenchfling.com/ ....she goes around to restaurants in Paris and writes and take amazing pictures of the food. All I can say is don't go to the site when you're hungry!
  • Suthii
"Can anyone here voutch for an authentic (anything close to France) Baguette? I’ve yet to find one in Seattle…."

    Nothing yet......still searching.
  • Joel Niemeyer
Man, any time I go to Le Panier or Nouveau (which is rarely), they don't have them. Therefore, I'm going to pass out my phone number to this group, and whoever calls me having encountered some gets a dozen. OK, just kidding about that. I guess I need to check them more often.
  • Locks Fan
I'm happy to report this place is off to a good start, especially considering it's the first day. I had the caramelized onion/Gruyere/thyme croissant, partner had cheddar corn scone; both quite tasty; and the Lighthouse coffee is terrific.
A lovely space, and the young, pleasant baker has a hit on his hands.
  • Louise
Wow, tried this on opening morning. pain au chocolate was amazing, warm, just out of the oven. Lighthouse Americano was perfect. They seem extremely friendly and excited about being in the ‘hood and getting to know their soon-to-be regulars. They had croissants (including a very interesting-sounding one in a circular shape, with carmelized sugar, salt, and butter…), scones (cherry almond and one savory), and a couple of other savory items. More stuff was coming out of the oven so I’ll be back to check it out again soon for sure. Not too much seating inside, just 5-6 barstools by the window and a few outdoor chairs. They are going to be open 7-3 Wed. thru Sunday (just like Besalu!)
  • silver
I had a blueberry, uh, something, pastry that was sooooooooo good! The blueberries were still warm! My walking buddy had a scone which, to his surprise, was possibly the best he had ever eaten! I made sure he told the bakers. ;-)

It wasn't even all that expensive!
  • silver
Honore has become my favorite morning walk destination. I took some photos there the other day:

    Enjoy!
  • pioggia
the macarons are nice, the croissant is too bready for a croissant, but nonetheless a tasty little baked good. Can't wait to try the Koiugn Aman! (that would probably be Louise's "very interesting-sounding in a circular shape, with carmelized sugar, salt, and butter…")

I just wish they were open on the days when Besalu is closed & I want a fun pastry treat....
  • pioggia
Went back today for the Kouign Amann, wow! salty sugary pastry goodness! In fact, all of the pastries we tried today were excellent, but if I'm going to patronize them I need to follow Silver's example & make them part of a walk to work off some of those yummy buttery calories :->
