New cafe opening on 6th Ave.

Posted by Geeky Swedes on July 17th, 2008

There’s a new cafe opening across 6th Ave. NW from Sambar and Le Gourmand. The Sun Cafe has a sign on the door that says “opening soon.” The place is all papered up, although we tried to peak through the cracks, anyway. An email tipster tells us that they have an espresso machine and a pie cooler. A sign installer told our tipster that they hope to open at the end of the month.

This is just across Market St. from where the new Veraci pizza will be opening soon. (Thanks Brian and Eden for the tip!)

Update - I drove by the Sun Cafe yesterday (Tues., July 22nd) and there was still paper on the windows. It was a hive of activity, so it should open soon!

Louise - Half way through reading your review above I knew you were talking about Honore, which I just visited on Sunday. Isn't it amazing?

I can't wait to try the Sun Cafe too. Wish I knew if they were open today! Perhaps that's where my morning walk will end up. ;-)

oops, above review was meant for Honore! I will move it to the appropriate location and feel free to delete above!

Wow, tried this on opening morning. pain au chocolate was amazing, warm, just out of the oven. Lighthouse Americano was perfect. They seem extremely friendly and excited about being in the 'hood and getting to know their soon-to-be regulars. They had croissants (including a very interesting-sounding one in a circular shape, with carmelized sugar, salt, and butter...), scones (cherry almond and one savory), and a couple of other savory items. More stuff was coming out of the oven so I'll be back to check it out again soon for sure. Not too much seating inside, just 5-6 barstools by the window and a few outdoor chairs. They are going to be open 7-3 Wed. thru Sunday (just like Besalu!)
  • Ben: That lady does not own the place. She's just a tenant who rents half of the building for her hair salon afaik.

John Eddy - Thanks for the link to Wondermark - it's fabulous! I subscribed. ;-)

I've been watching this place take shape over the last year or so. I think they've been doing it on weekends/in their spare time. The inside was looking really good last time I could see through the windows, but it's tiny - only a couple tables - so a bit small for a breakfast joint. Plenty of room for a waffle iron though :->

The lady who owns the place (and the hair place next store) told me that it will be a waffle/general breakfast place, this was a while ago but that is what I remember. I am excited that my neighborhood is becoming so...useful.
  • I really hope it does open by the end of the month. Monty Reed (http://www.metacafe.com/watch/1021864/exoskelet...) used to own the house and use it as his workshop and he left well over a year ago. The cafe has been in the works for months and was originally supposed to open LAST summer.

I also hope they have good food or something besides coffee because I live right next door (literally) and the thought of a decent cafe within spitting distance makes me giddy.

    Did somebody say pie?

    Pie cooler! Pie cooler! Yahoo!
  • I hope it's a hippy health food place. Ballard needs a decent veggie restaurant or juice bar!!!
