Firefighters ‘Fill the Boot’

Posted by Geeky Swedes on July 18th, 2008

Traffic could be a little snarled at the intersection at 15th Ave and Market St today (Friday) as firefighters raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. This is the annual “Fill the Boot” fundraiser where firefighters stand in the street from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. asking for donations. Drivers are encouraged to toss cash, checks and change into the boots. Since 1954, “Fill the Boot” campaigns have raised more than $300 million for MDA. Today, firefighters hope to raise $100,000. The Seattle campaign helps support UW Medical Center and Children’s Hospital in addition to a summer camp for kids.

  • The fire station was the first stop a group of parents made back in 1954, just two years after the began the Muscular Dystrophy Association. So for the last 54 years fire fighters have been filling their boots in intersections around the country, without incident. They have also been volunteer camp counselors at MDA Summer Camps, and host various other events. I work for MDA and have been able to get to know these families and the struggles they face... and every day I thank God that the fire fighters are there to help us raise much need funds in order to provide hope and help to these local families. For those of you who donanted, thank you. Your money goes to help local families attend our clinics at UW and Childrens, equipment purchases, delivery and repairs of our loan closet equipment, a week long summer camp for kids in North Bend, our Young Adult, General and ALS support groups, and the much needed research so one day I will be out of a job!

If you would like to donate you can click on the web link that is listed. Locally in King County, 92% of every dollar goes directly to patient services!

Say you guys take a cute dalmation with you to fill the boot ,people may put more money in it. Have the dog do tricks ,they also may put more money in the boot.

Regardless of whether or not they have what it takes to stand in the street with a boot, I have to agree that it does seem dangerous and reckless especially on that busy street. Why can't they do this on the sidewalk or outside of Ballard Market where there's plenty of foot traffic which would probably bring in more money?

These are firefighters, I'm pretty sure 98% of their job requires "needing some serious guts" :)

    thanks for the heads up.

firefighters need guts to be firefighters. they can be quite nimble though.

I always get a little worried about them too. Especially when they're right in the middle of the lanes and people are whizzin' by turning left.

It's for a good cause, but boy - talk about needing some serious guts to stand there like that in traffic!!!

This always seems really dangerous to me. I'm afraid that sooner or later some idiot driver is going to hit one of the firefighters...
