Daily news for Seattle's Ballard neighborhood

Goats grazing along 64th Ave.

First some goats showed up mysteriously in Peggy Sturdivant’s neighborhood, then a few days later she discovers more goats snacking on foliage a few blocks away along 64th Ave. “Whether these goats are on loan to deal with bushes or are now residents in the neighborhood, I don’t know yet,” she writes. Last year the city council voted to allow residents to keep miniature goats as pets.

Update: A My Ballard reader, who asked to remain anonymous, says the goats are at her house. “We rented them for landscape clearing so that we could begin to put in a retaining wall. It seemed a much greener option and far less polluting than hiring a gardener.” This one is named Kiki and the other is Myra. “Kiki is quite friendly and will let people pet her. Myra is a bit skittish and might not, and passers by should keep their dogs back a bit and be careful of the horns.” She says they rented them from “the goat lady” and plan to keep them around for a week or longer, depending on their progress.

They are very nice goats. I took their picture with my cell phone. It was really a surprise to ride by them on my bike. I had to do a double take!

I wrote The Goat Lady after I read this a little while ago.

We've been needing some help with the loads of weeds, morning glory and overgrown bushes in our backyard, and this seems like a great way to deal with it! I hope she writes me back soon. I can't wait to try this out!

Cool! I live a few doors down from these two temporary goats, and it's been kind of fun hearing the "baas" throughout the day. :) I figured they were serving as super green lawnmowers!

I think it's great! Go little Capricorns!
(Please don't eat the garden gloves.)

Cool! I'd love to know of a local service that will rent out just a couple goats. I know there are people who will rent a herd for the day, but it's uber expensive and overkill for a small yard...
  • I love goats! My sister had a few goats but they were eating the barn so they found a new home. :(
