New boutique moving into Ben & Jerry’s spot

Posted by Geeky Swedes on July 30th, 2008

A new boutique called Asher Anson is moving into the empty space on Market St. near Ballard Ave. left by the departing Ben & Jerry’s. “Asher Anson provides well-constructed, premium men’s and women’s clothing,” explains their just-launched website. “(We’re) very much looking forward to our opening in August (no solid date yet) and sharing our brands with you!”

Jeez-36 posts about a stupid clothing shop opening up on Market Street?

You people need some hobbies or something...

Hey, what about the long term residents that ARE dot-commers?

Suthii- you nut, I've fallen for you antics too many times already! But I've come to realize that I'm not one of those you so loathe! I for one don't mind your references to nativists, I guess I just would rather you didn't generalize everybody that lived here before you, or expresses their sadness (not complaining mind you) for things lost- be those a Manning's, an Eagle's hall, or whatever- as one. Maybe that's not what you're doing, so correct me if I'm wrong. Sometime it's just about lamenting loss, not necessarily being against anything.

Having said that, I hate all generalization, and I also do tire of whining - any whining about change. And others I have read posts from IMHO (and I'm saying this nicely, people, not as a slam) here and other places, are guilty of "generalizing" as well. Statements about "these people" (new people moving here to Ballard) and things of that ilk. That and the SeattleWeeklyesque constant and old negative references to "yuppies". Gawd how I'm sick of those doofuses [insert Suthiiesque rant about gearless bikes, Birkenstocks, and "I HEART Viaduct bumber stickers].

BUT- you do have to admit (and I'm saying this nicely) that do you exhibit the tendencies of the classic troll (one who says sensational things online, strictly for the purpose of eliciting an emotional reaction). I'm just saying...

Bottom line: Anybody here an ax murderer? I doubt it. I'll bet we're all pretty nice people in person. The one thing I can't stand about online interaction is the anonymity- not knowing who people are. I gotta believe that at some point, some two people here have crossed paths and were probably even maybe nice to each other. Hell, maybe we're even friends, or acquaintances at school or something (of course,I use my real name when posting, so I imagine somebody would have said something by now, so what the hell do I know?!).

Geez people, it's just a stupid boring little boutique. Would I rather it was a soda fountain- hells yeah! Not all that interesting to me, but maybe it IS to somebody who is good looking!! ;-) Now Suth, how about that akavit you were going to buy me at the CG?

"So if a member of the Shilsholamish Tribe tells you to “zip it” would THAT make you stop attacking people for wanting to preserve some of the character of our neighborhood?"

Sure, got any around? Of course, I don't think Dennys, Sunset Bowl, the culinary feast that was the China Buffet and crumbling Ballard cottages with pick up trucks parked on the lawns are Shilsholamish artifacts? Maybe I'm wrong.

So if a member of the Shilsholamish Tribe tells you to "zip it" would THAT make you stop attacking people for wanting to preserve some of the character of our neighborhood? Somehow I doubt it...

"Whole Foods? Not even in Ballard."

Just a short drive away and coming soon on the new and approved 15th Ave! Should help continue the slow but inevitable gentrification of Ballard.
  • Suthii
    " the long-time residents"

The Nativists? The only 'long term residents' allowed to complain about their institutions disappearing are the Natives, everyone else is a tourist.
  • Duncan
Also, "dot-commers"? Do such people even exist anymore? And Whole Foods? Not even in Ballard.
  • Duncan
No, our troll doesn't complain about those things. Our troll only complains about the long-time residents and the longstanding institutions of the neighborhood he/she moved to just several years ago, willingly. It's still complaining.

Oh, and he/she complains when mommy makes him/her get off the computer and come upstairs for dinner.
  • Suthii
" I suppose every site has its troll. "

Ballard troll = someone who doesn't p*ss and moan about developers/change/yuppies/$4 coffee/wine bars/gentrification/dotcomers/design and marketing companies/Whole Foods/TRader Joes and dares to call others on it.

Sorry boys, the free ride is over.
  • MonkeyPilot
FWIW, my question for Suthii (snarky as it might have been) was not specifically about this post, but rather the overall pattern of negativity demonstrated in his comments. That burp was perhaps the most intelligent comment I've seen from him.

Of course, I suppose every site has its troll. Congratulations!
  • Joel Niemeyer
Well, that's not the kind of "still sitting" I was hoping for.

Speaking of B&J's though, I think I'll go indulge in a spoonful on "Cinnamon Bun" something or other. Sounds awful but smells great!

"I can afford to shop boutiques."

M, you must remember, in Ballard if you direct all your vitriol at so-called yuppies i.e. anyone who makes over $100k/yr, lives in an expensive house/condo/townhouse, drinks those infamous $4 coffees, drives anything other than a beat up truck, shaves more than once a week, doesn't think 'The deadliest Catch' deserves an Emmy, drinks imported wine and doesn't go to blogs and rant and rave about developers and nice boutiques offering unique clothing, than it's OK to be a misanthropic jerk.

Challenge any of these attacks, and that infamous Ballard tolerance will chase you down the street and slug you with a U-lock.

" I want to think that it’s all still sitting somewhere….waiting…."

    Buuuuuurrrrrrp.......

    >>I think we should just all be concerned about what happened to all the ice cream when they shut the place down?! I mean, like, did they like just throw it away? <<

LOL no kidding! I'd like answer to this now. Somebody should be held accountable. For what I don't know, but I want answers! What happened to all that ice cream? I do not accept rowbot's answer. I want to think that it's all still sitting somewhere....waiting....
  • rowbot
As with most eco-green ice-cream shops currently closing, the ice-cream was melted together to form a greenish brown sludge which was then re-frozen and repacked in Fred Meyer containers. I think it's called Ballard Mint Algae Chip Swirl. Half gallons are on sale now at Fred's for $1.99.
  • Spaghettio
Ha ha! Yeah Milo! "high five"! If you want to go really, really old school Ballard, we would bring back the JC Penny's that used to be where you get your car tabs now!
  • milo dakkat
Hey, if you can't find it at Fred Meyer, ya don't need to wear it. Oh wait...that's sooo old Ballard.
  • Spaghettio
I think we should just all be concerned about what happened to all the ice cream when they shut the place down?! I mean, like, did they like just throw it away? I think they should have opened a condo in this location. There CLEARLY are not enough of these.
  • rowbot
How is "eco-clothing" not a niche boutique market? Regardless, my point was that in this economy, there are going to be fewer people who can afford to shop at smaller stores with higher prices. I have nothing against what they sell and am all for higher quality shoes and clothing but it does come at a price. People are being a lot more careful with their spending these days so unless gas and food prices go down or we all get generous pay increases it's going to be a lot harder for smaller specialty businesses to be successful. The exceptions seem to be WhateverBerry and chocolate chip cookie places, which are apparently placating people now that they can't afford the blue suede shoes they had their eye on at Billy's Ballard Boot Boutique.

    "Suthii // Jul 31, 2008 at 11:08 am"

FYI, this is not me, this is some one who can't even hide behind a login name to post. Probably Peter.
  • Suthii
What kind of loser has to steal someone's name to post? Fight like a man......
  • Suthii
To answer the question though, yes, I am always a misanthropic jerk -- at least during the 8 hours a day I spend on the internets.
  • m
I'm with Suthii on this one - he/she just called out a sweeping generalization or assumption. Nothing misanthropic about it. I can afford to shop boutiques.

Now if you want to talk about the size 14 and up issue - I'm in! LOL
  • Suthii
"are you always a misanthropic jerk?"

What, by pointing out that some folks can afford to shop in boutiques and we are welcoming them to Ballard? I'd imagine the misanthropic jerks would be the people who don't welcome new businesses to Ballard simply because they are too expensive for them.
  • NAG
That was great. Can't wait to see THAT reply.
  • MonkeyPilot
Hey Suthii - do you ever have anything good to say, or are you always a misanthropic jerk?
  • Jmi
I don't know about the prices there but from the manikins in the windows at Bella's they seem to have sizes into which one will fit should they still want to eat Ben and Jerry's. And it's a bit of a walk (but a nice one) to the scoop shop at 65th and 32nd.

I'm happy to have something in that space other than papered windows. We can always talk with the owners and let them know what kinds of things we want. If they're too expensive for the community they won't last.

And update on the space in Fremont rowbot - Nau (the company that was going to go in there) wasn't a chi-chi boutique but a clothing company with a rather interesting concept of trying to re-think eco-clothing and retailing. The whole company is currently undergoing restructuring which is why they didn't end up going in.
  • milo dakkat
More tiny shoes and fashion victim clothes I bet. Bring on the size 14 and up I say...

or more sushi...or a place that sells Iams.
  • gooner
There was a Ben and Jerrys in Ballard?.
  • Joel Niemeyer
I second that yawn. More food places! Now! :-)
  • Ep
We need a beef jerky hut.
  • lizad
Clothes are fine and all, but I still miss having a place in walking distance that has good scooped ice cream on a cone. :(

Frozen yogurt and smoothies just don't cut it, sometimes.
  • Suthii
"Great….another clothing shop that people can’t afford."

    What people? You?
  • BallardG
Great....another clothing shop that people can't afford.

    Great.

    Sigh.
  • rowbot
How long do they expect to last in this economy and locale? A similar place in Fremont closed before it even opened and now a MooBerry (or WhateverBerry) is slated to move in.
  • NAG
    yawn ...
  • Spaghettio
So, I am assuming it is one of those boutique's where you can not eat Ben & Jerry's otherwise you can not fit into the clothes? Sweeeetly ironic...
