Tires slashed near 8th Ave.

Posted by Geeky Swedes on August 21st, 2008

A My Ballard reader emailed us today:

“Sometime in the 24 hours between 8 a.m. Monday morning and 8 a.m. Tuesday morning… the two passenger-side tires on my SUV were slashed while it was parked near 8th Ave NW. The two tires are completely ruined and have to be replaced.

He believes this is a random act of vandalism, but he’s wondering if this has been happening around Ballard.

If the graffiti is on a business, you could call and ask them to paint it over.

I recently called the Ballard Mandarin restaurant to do just this, and the graffiti was painted over the next day. I followed up this afternoon to thank them.

I also called Jiffy Lube on 15th, but got no answer (??), so I reported it to the City's Graffiti Report Line at (206) 684-7587. They said they will send a letter out to the owner. Hopefully, that graffiti will also disappear soon.

Picking up the phone was pretty easy, I encourage everyone here to do the same as soon as graffiti appears.

    elle-

"i am definitely down on people complaining about noise in the street at night"

think about it. if it doesn't come to you, then it explains a lot. good luck w/the wood thing.

Regardless what the penalty is, you've got to catch them first, don't you?

Wimpy liberal laws at work..... let's go Singapore style on these little bastards with a public caning, stoning, or lop a finer or two off.

    Problem solved I guarantee.

last week there was ms-13 graffiti on my street (62nd & 8th) and it totally freaked me out! it was covered in about 1 day but it still bothers me. wtf is going on? i am hoping for copy cat but its still messed up.
complaining about people being upset by vandalism because "other people" have it so much worse is silly. to each their own. i am definitely down on people complaining about noise in the street at night but vandalism is costly, threatening and feels very personal.

granted, i feel pretty safe in ballard but as i say that i am knocking on wood.

I remember when we’ve had a season of graffiti and a lot of contact with the SPD. The police would say that drug dealing gangs, car break-ins, burglary and vandalism are usually separate activities done by separate groups.
The MS13 symbol could just be a copycat thing with no gang attachment at all.

There's a MS13 tag on Jiffy Lube on 15th too....and who cares if they are Mexican or Salvadorean, they're scumbags and are moving into Greenwood ave at 85th by the looks of it.
  • suthii
Time for check points on 85th thru' Greenwood to keep the riff raft out. Either that or is it time to visit Butch's Guns on Aurora?

ANT, there's no comparing Compton to Ballard, so why do it? To tell everyone that they're complaining about nothing? Well if you had to buy two new tires you'd complain about the vandalism. Trust me.
  • ANT
i grew up in Compton...Ballard is the most cookie cutter neighborhood around.
WOW SOMEONES TIRES WERE SLASHED!! OH NO!
get over it there's violence everywhere.
we still live in a big city.

I know car vandalism sucks and it's a major pain in the ass, but compared to the rest of the country we have it pretty good. I'll take nonviolent crime any day.

In Mississippi (probably not the best example, haha), there are so many violent home invasions that (gated) apartment buildings have panic buttons next to the bed. It's scary stuff.

I love being in Ballard- I feel safe sleeping with the window partially opened :)

whyyyy! Why are there idiots in the world that do crap like this? ! Find something else to do!
  • Evan
We've never had any problems at 7th and 70th, but will keep our nighttime eyes peeled for those mafiosa.
  • Dan
MS-13 is originally Salvadoran, but you know, it's all the same to you, right?

I've been living in Ballard for two years, just north of 65th and 8th. My car was stolen last year then six moths ago my new car was B and E'd . They tore out my console for my hands free!
That is what happens when you live one block away from a drug dealer and no cops around!
  • DM
Within a couple of blocks of Market.

(I'm the unhappy recipient of the vandalism.)

They cut 2 tires, so I couldn't even just use my spare to drive, and cut the sidewalls so the tires can't be repaired.

    8th Avenue NW and where?
  • boardbrown
Yes, it's been happening for years. We get huge rocks or bricks lobbed at our cars all the time.
Welcome to the world of bored douchebag teens.
