Nordic Museum to become ‘world-class museum’

Posted by Geeky Swedes on August 26th, 2008

For nearly 30 years, the Nordic Heritage Museum has called the old Daniel Webster Elementary School on NW 67th Street home. But after the Seattle School District refused to sell the property to the museum, they purchased land on the south side of Market Street between 26th and 28th. “Now that we’ve purchased a piece of property we’ve hired architects and designers and are in the intention to move. The vision is to build and create a new world-class museum right in the heart of Ballard. It’ll be a beautiful location and we wanted to make sure the architecture of the museum would be an embodiment of the Nordic American experience,” Eric Nelson, executive director of the museum told the Ballard News Tribune. The school district anticipates the museum will stay at their current location for 5-7 more years.

Interesting. The Nordic American experience is significantly different than the last 30 years and current Scandinavian architecture language. I'm anxious to see who gets the architectural gig and how much the community hates the design...before they see it. Current Danish architecture would be mocked at a Design Review Board hearing for not fitting in with the neighborhood.

I'm wondering what the school district plans to do with the building once the museum leaves, since they weren't interested in selling it outright. It's a fabulous facility, and I hope it becomes something useful like a community center, with the auditorium & kitchen still rentable for special events.

Juhani Pallasmaa is the architect. Google him. He's the world's premier Scandinavian architect...and we should consider ourselves extremely lucky to eventually have one of his buildings in our neighborhood. Trust me, no one will "hate" his design. And the DRB will roll over and play dead.

I am glad that the Nordic Heritage Museum will have a "World Class" facility. The new location should be a good boost as well.

Modern Scandinavian architecture is amazing! I can't wait to see what pallasmaa comes up with, even if it is a more traditional look.

We really need to stay on top of what happens to that land. That park is more used than three quarters of the other parks in ballard.

I wouldn't worry, Joshua. I think the SSD is reluctant to sell schools. So whatever goes in there would probably be in that building.

Having said that, I'd hate to see it go, too! I went to elementary school there!
