Ballard resident prepares to open Shiku Sushi

Posted by Geeky Swedes on August 31st, 2008

The sign has gone up over Shiku Sushi, one of two new sushi restaurants preparing to open along Ballard Ave. We spoke with owner Rob Kim, who says the plan is to bring in “Japanese tapas” along with traditional sushi, plenty of sake and a full bar — a twist that Rob says will differentiate Shiku from its competitor just a couple doors down, Moshi Moshi Sushi.

Rob is a Ballard resident who worked at Red Fin sushi in downtown Seattle, and he says he saw a need to bring more sushi to the neighborhood. It’s his first restaurant, but he says his uncle — who manages four sushi restaurants in San Diego — is helping him with the launch. Shiku is slated to open in a month.

Fantastic job Rob! Your Uncle Jimmy is truly an asset - we hope you can keep him up here for as long as possible, and thanks again for a wonderful evening, we'll see you again soon!

Shiku is now open and I have to say it is great! Warm atmosphere and the menu has plenty of delicious, creative things to try. I will be back to try more. Say hi to Rob if he is tending bar - the friendliest bartender on the avenue.

    more the merrier.

i am pretty certain that ballard can sustain these two sushi joints... i think sams may be in trouble though. however, they are a little cheaper than the norm, so maybe they will keep their crowd.

musachis in wallingford has to be about the worst sushi in all of seattle, but it is so cheap that they are always packed.

Can't wait. Should be fun to have around. My understanding is that Moshi moshi will also have sake and a full bar. Showdown or the more the merrier?

We'll now have Thaiku and Skiku on the same street. I hope this new "ku" is as good or better than Thaiku. Right now Thaiku is one of fav Ballard restaurants.

I can't wait for Shiku to open, it'll be nice not to have to travel to Fremont for good sushi!

I think Japanese tapas is izakaya, like they have up in vancouver and now downtown seattle at Wan Izakaya.
If so we're in luck, because it's unbelievably good and different than you'd expect.

Isn't "tapas" the Spanish equivalent? ;-)
  • Geeky Swedes
Pioggia, we have to admit Rob used a Japanese word to describe them, which we didn't catch. But the English equivalent is tapas.

Interested to see what the non-sushi items turn out to be. I cant eat fish or seafood, but a place I could go with my fish loving friends would be great.

Oh and I really hope they don't use the phrase "Japanese Tapas" on the menu. If you have small plates or appetizers or whatever that's great but they're NOT tapas.

Good luck! I can't wait either. Love sushi and the small plates - I hope you have some good beers and sake too.

Can't wait for Shiku to open! We need some good sushi in Ballard (no, Sam's doesn't count) and expect Rob to do a great job at this.
