Beavers overwhelmed in season opener

Posted by Geeky Swedes on September 5th, 2008

John Bowers’ first game as head coach of the Ballard Beavers ended in a stinging defeat this Friday night. Renton’s Liberty High beat the Beavers decisively in the season opener at Memorial Stadium, 43-7.

Now, I’m not a sports writer, but I’m a football fan, and the game was painful to watch. Turnover after turnover plagued the Beavers on offense.

Here, a Liberty player returns an interception for a touchdown. “It looked like we weren’t coached well, and we weren’t,” Bowers told reporters after the game. “I’ll take total responsibility for this one.”

But it’s not all about winning, right? (And it was a non-league game.) The cheerleaders kept the crowd in the game, and everyone seemed to have a good time. Here’s a video clip of a few highlights, and click below for more photos…

Just a clerical note here - Liberty High School may have a Renton address but it's actually in the Issaquah School District. (It's outside Renton city limits so it's really unincorporated King County.) Not that anybody here cares, but I went to Liberty years ago, and no one anywhere can ever figure out how to properly refer to the school!

Hang in there, guys! You will get better. Remember the Huskies started out losing big in their first game, then came screaming back much improved over a much better (than Oregon) BYU team.

I really should make it to a game for my good ol alma mater what with my 30th reunion coming up. ;-)
  • Boy, they got licked....

Yes, the school has boosters, you can find out more on the athletics website: http://www.ballardathletics.com/
Also, I believe that games cost $6-$8 dollars, or in that range.

What does it cost to go to the home games? I wouldn't mind cheering on the Beavers every once in a while.

Poor Beavers! We're really looking forward to going to their home games this season. Does anyone know if Ballard High has boosters?
