By all appearances, Ballard is Obama country, from all the yard signs to the “Ballard for Obama” T-shirts. And now there’s this:

This freshly-carved Obama pumpkin was seen in the Whittier Heights neighborhood. Now that’s showing your support.

One of my neighbors now has an Obama pumpkin along with some more traditional ones. I think it's a fun way to express your political support/views!

"this is SO Ballard! Not sure if you’ve noticed, but the town is Obama central."

    =====

All this proves is that there are a bunch of really naive white people in Ballard.

I like the Obama pumpkin better than the signs. The first Obama Biden sign that went up I saw through the corner of my eye, and for a split second I thought it said Osama Bin...den. Freaky. For some reason, it gave me a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach that other people might see the same and think there's a connection. Gulp.

    pdx-

i thought fruit had the seeds on the inside and veggies were the seed grown. maybe we better try google.com like someone suggested on another entry....
  • milo dakkat
The thing with a comparable McCain pumpkin is that it would be shrivelled, rotten, and putrid before you even carved out the seeds.

Btw, if you don't like the blog post, don't read it...or better yet, take the initiative to submit something that you do find relevant. And don't forget to wipe off the keyboard when you're done with the library's computer.

Homeless dude: Pumpkins are vegetables, not fruit.
  • Roy Hobbs
I'm one of the few Republicans in Ballard. No problem with this at all.

I'm just surprised someone had the patience to do it - carving pumpkins is such a pain in the butt.
  • If anyone else wants to Obamarize their pumpkin, a Yes We Carve stencil might come in handy.

regardless of party affiliation, it's someone in Ballard expressing themselves in a seasonal/creative way. I thing there's room on the blog for both "hard news" ballard info AND "human interest" ballard pieces.
  • Obama Mama
JV - this is SO Ballard! Not sure if you've noticed, but the town is Obama central.
  • GOBAMA
    JV -
Obama and Ballard are synonymous and it's very relevant to what's going on right now in Ballard.

FWIW, I've read (but not verified) that a thin coat of Elmer's glue will prevent pumpkin curdling.

    jv--

it's local. i spotted it today east of 15th. the blog still has it's local sentiment.
  • JV
I'm a little disappointed to see this posted on the blog, it is insignificant to the neighborhood and inconsistent with the majority of the posts. I look forward to reading the MyBallard blog from time to time because of the fun, interesting, and usually pertinent neighborhood info that isn't reported by other sources. This however, has no bearing on anything, it could be a picture from another part of the country for all we know and I feel like the blog could have done without it.

homeless dude: Its just a pumpkin!! Chill already :-)
  • Atlas
homeless dude, glad to see a pumpkin getting you so riled up, way to have your life prioritized.
  • boardbrown
They carved it too soon. By the time Halloween rolls around it'll be a mushy pile of goo.

Notice I didn't say who I'm voting for this election. My comment has nothing to do with political affiliation.

Seriously. What is the point of this? What the heck does a pumpkin have to do with Obama? I'm not going to form a political opinion based on a carved piece of fruit.

All I'm saying is that slapping the Obama logo all over everything is lame... putting something that's hip and popular at the moment onto a t-shirt, mug, or pumpkin does not immediately make it "cool".

"Hey! That pumpkin has an Obama logo on it! *I* like Obama! I think Obama is cool! We must share similar beliefs! Therefore that pumpkin is cool and so is the person who carved it!"

It's just as lame as people who are SO into the Seahawks (or any other team sport) that they put up a flag outside their house, buy everything with the team logo on it, buy season tickets, paint themselves up and go to games screaming without a shirt on... if you saw a pumpkin outside of a house with a Seahawks logo on it, even if you were a Seahawks fan, you're telling me you wouldn't think that was a stupid a way of showing support for the team?

This is also just as dumb as people who plaster the back of their car with bumperstickers (political or otherwise) to try and define themselves and let everyone know who they are... but that's a topic for another article.

If you have political opinions, try to express them in a somewhat inteligent manner, people... lay off the bumper stickers and gourds.

    and don't forget the
sleeps in the car next to the neatly hung up drycleaning and goes to a job every day homeless group.
  • Atlas
    >>We all belong to the same group! Isn’t it great?!

What group do you belong to homeless dude? The Market st and 15th Ave drunks, dopers and alley pissers group or the Ballard Commons tumble-down and fall on my face while screaming obsceneties at 4 year olds homeless group?
  • Tracy
I've supported Obama since before he even declared his candidacy, and in contrast to homeless dude's opinion, I couldn't be more excited to see folks jumping on any bandwagon involving political activism and involvement.
  • CaffinatorX
Dude - The "band wagon", most of the time, is vague indifference - and that's how we ended up with some rich guy's spoiled kid for a president for 8 years. People are interested in their own way. Just because it's not to your taste doesn't make it lame.
  • homeless dude
    *groan*

Yes, THAT is REALLY showing your support... carving a pumpkin. Huge gesture. Big effort.

I'm getting tired of all these Obama supporters plastering the name / logo all over stuff. Is it just me or does all this seem like in high school when the hip kids all had to have clothes with the cool labels? "Ooh! Look at me! I'm flashing the popular trend of the moment! I'm jumping on the band waggon by trying to loosely tie something about myself with what everyone else is talking about! Identify with me! We all belong to the same group! Isn't it great?!"

LAME no matter who you support...
