Ballard Post Office may not move

Posted by Geeky Swedes on November 5th, 2008

Last month we reported that the U.S. post office on 57th & 17th will be moving. Now we’re hearing that that may not necessarily be the case.

According to Ernie Swanson, public information officer for the post office, the lease on the property is up for renewal the beginning of next year. He said they’re considering several options before making a decision whether to sign a new lease, including moving to the carrier annex near Fred Meyer. The post office is not being “forced” to move, as several employees had told us earlier. We’ll keep you updated on what they decide…

This Ernie guy sounds like he's really in the know ;) I've heard the lease is up in 3 or 4 years vs. next year.

And this is the "information" guy? SCARY!

Sorry, I HATE that corner. It is ripe for multiple accidents.
I'd still like a PO I could walk to and into, however this space is terrible wit the new influx of condo's people.
    I avoid it regularly.
The annex seems like a better choice to me, plus that area is going to become more and more walkable and accessible due to the new construction/ Trader Joe's.

I agree--if they move, I think its a big mistake. So many people use that location due to its convenience, they probably would lose money in the long term. And, let us not forget that if they moved to "thier" building by fred meyer, we, as taxpayers, pay for that too. So, its not like they are "saving" us any money, but they are saving us time if they stay.

Looks like Ernie Swanson who was quoted above is a good person to contact. Here is the number to the ballard location, along w/the 800 number to submit feedback:

    (800) ASK-USPS
    (206) 781-4656 (ballard location)

I'd also like to know if there's a way to provide input to the decision-makers. I very much like the current location of the PO, it's very easy to walk to from several areas in Ballard and I cannot say the same about the Annex location.

Any idea who at the Post Office we would contact to give (civil) input?

They could develop the land AND keep the post office. It would be nice to have something other than a tanning salon or cafe underneath condo buildings.

Golly, it would be super keen if they would stay.

I would still like to see them move. It's sitting on prime real estate. Is the lease option going up in price? I really hate to see the Feds spend money on that when there is plenty or room at the carrier annex.

All those raised blood pressures for nuttin...

Good God... the last post office story had like 80 comments of CRAZY!

    And all for possibly nothing.

    :)

Oh, you heard this from employees? No wonder.
