Changes coming to NW 70th St

Posted by Geeky Swedes on November 13th, 2008

The small business center at 14th Ave NW & NW 70th St is going through some changes. A few weeks ago we wrote about Gracewinds closing suddenly, now we’ve learned what may be taking its place

There’s been some activity in the vacant space which now has plastic covering the windows. According to the owner of Honore’ Bakery and a designer who was measuring the space, a gourmet pizza place may be going in there.

Across the street, the Treed Cafe has been sold to Chef Anne Catherine who will be opening “A Caprice Kitchen” on November 24th. The new restaurant will serve breakfast and lunch Wednesday through Sunday 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. She’ll also serve communal dinners every Friday at 7 p.m. starting tomorrow (Friday) night. Chef Anne Catherine visits the Ballard Farmers Market every week and then cooks up a four-course meal from what she gets at the market. During the meal she’ll share what she learned from the farmers.

another pizza joint?? for crying out loud...

a caprice kitchen, however, sounds exciting. i want to know more about these communal dinners.

    bummer, i dig treed.

ballard must have the most pizza joints per person in seattle.

Wouldn't you think someone would do a little research before opening a business? Why would you open the same business as everybody else?

    I just don't get it.

No doubt on the # of Ballard pizza joints - it's getting a little out of control. Not to mention, Zaw Pizza is not far from opening up at the Canal Station.

I'm thrilled to have them in the neighborhood. I was getting quite sick of Barking Dog but would go back time and time again because it's within walking distance.

We have pizza places like Fremont has Thai places..
  • swassociates
Guess what folks. If they don't get customers they won't survive, if they do they will.

    Duh.
  • Dazed and confused in Ballard
I agree, WAY to many pizza joints. Why not a good Chinese place, I ate at Golden city a few times and it is just bad food, not mention the drug and drunk heaven their bar is for the neighborhood.

    Signed-

    E/C - that's exactly what I was thinking.

Yeah- I can't really see a Chinese joint there, that seems little weird. Why would anyone even walk into Golden City? I think I did once as a joke... As long as the food is well done and the drinks and atmosphere are good I'm cool with the pizza thing. Let's just hope these people can make pie, no half-stepin.

I believe the chef from Treed bought the restaurant- so no real changes. Treed is the absolute best breakfast in the city.

    I'm still sad about Gracewinds.

(Which is not to say I'm interested in having another argument with Angry Anti-Breastfeeding Guy. Sheesh, talk about a chip on your shoulder.)
  • There may be too many pizza joints in Ballard, but I must say that I had a really really good one at that wood-fired place on Monday afternoon!

    MMmmmmmm!
  • Lexicon Girl
Definitely too many pizza places - but I agree with swassociates: If we buy, they stay. How about a nice Scandinavian restaurant? I have to drive to Ikea to get meatballs and lingonberry now. There's something terribly wrong about that. I miss old ballard :( ...

There are a lot of pizza joints, but most of them suck, so another decent one would be nice.

That said, would it kill Ballard to open another decent Indian place?
  • The owner of Treed and I have been working very hard to make the transition to A Caprice Kitchen a good one. I will still be offering breakfast and lunch, but an abbreviated menu using only local, seasonal ingredients. Think very simple french food. Dinners will feature set menus on Fridays for now. Hopefully I will be able to open four nights a week for dinner in January. Come visit. The new menu will be posted on my website by the end of next week, and you will see that I have kept some Treed Cafe favorites!

    Oh no, Treed gone?!?!
It was our favorite breakfast place, someplace my whole family could enjoy a great meal, including my vegan husband.
Will the new place have a vegan item or two pretty please?
  • I want to thank my customers, friends and neighbors for eight wonderful years at the cafe.
Join me in welcoming Anne Catherine to the neighborhood and i hope you get a chance to enjoy her amazing dishes.
  • Just ate at the new A Caprice Kitchen and loved it! Fresh, local food, simply and perfectly prepared. I was a fan of Treed, but am more than pleased with its replacement. Also looking forward to welcoming Mr. Orangette's pizza place to my microhood.
