Fundraiser for barista injured in accident

Posted by Geeky Swedes on November 26th, 2008

The morning barista at Aster Coffee Lounge, Tish, was hospitalized after she was seriously injured in a bicycle crash, but she doesn’t have health insurance. So the coffeehouse is putting on a fundraiser this Saturday night with live music, raffle prizes, beer, wine (and coffee, of course).

It starts at 7 p.m. at Aster, located on 24th Ave. near 56th St. If you can’t make but still want to help, you can donate here.

Thanks for sharing the great link. I'm sure it will be helpful to many. But kim, you drop around $400 for a night out in Ballard? I didn't realize we had high-rollers in our midst. :-)

    play w/this

i too have a pre exisiting condition and still get by w/a policy for a family of 4 for under $400. and that's not catastrophic either. so there are policies out there for even less.

kim & philk: out of curiosity, is this available to persons with preexisting conditions...or will it be an affordable $3000 per month? Is it also a song for an entire family? As I'm sure you realize, not everyone has the same set of circumstances. I'm sure it feels fantastic, as long as you've also paid the rent.
  • If you don't have health insurance now, catastrophic or otherwise, from an employer or otherwise, please talk to some people you respect about getting insurance, or at least get a few quotes from insurance companies about a plan that fits your needs. Premera or Regence. Break your own taboo on talking about or taking the health care plunge; you don't have to like it, but you'll feel better when you do.

I'm a bicycle rider & am always curious about bike accidents. Do you have any more information on the accident?

there is catastrophic insurance one can get for a song. if one were to give up a night out in downtown ballard (just one i said) they could easily afford a policy. and it's an individual policy; not thru an employer. it can be done! cuz i'm doing it!!!

Nina: Maybe they don't, on account of being a tiny business. Or maybe they offer it after so many months, and Tish hasn't been there long enough. (The shop itself has only been open 8 months.) Or maybe they offer it and she didn't think she needed it. Plenty of likely scenarios, and without an ounce of information it seems silly to "guess" one way or the other.
  • I guess they don't offer insurance for their employees?
