Shopping craziness as storm approaches

Posted by Geeky Swedes on December 20th, 2008

4 p.m. update: As a big storm approaches, people are flooding stores in a last-minute attempt to stock up on supplies and buy holiday gifts. This was the scene at Fred Meyer today, courtesy of My Ballard reader Mitchncraig:

At Ballard Market, the scene was just as crazy. The line wrapped all the way down the front and wrapped back around the deli counter.

“I waited in line for 50 minutes for 13 items,” said Dylin in comments.

Outside, cars were parked all over the place, up and down surrounding streets. Have a shopping experience to share?

My neighbor attempted to get milk at the Ballard Market - parking lot was INSANE she said, and no carts/baskets left, people shoving and being rude and yelling at one another in the store! She gave up and went to the Greenmarket instead, got some of their last milk supply. We'll do without the rest of the stuff, we have essentials to last, the rest were 'luxuries'.

my wife and i just got back from pike place market. it was only normally crowded, and we had a great time finishing up christmas shopping.

The QFC on 85th was a mess this morning, and the cashiers were moving slower than I had ever seen them. There are days to be chatty and days to put your head down and work. Today is for the latter...idiots.

On the other hand, they seemed to have a fair amount salt, firewood, and other snow essentials.

Freddies was insane, but people seemed to be in generally good spirits. It took us over an hour to check out though - not because of the line, but because our cashier (at lane 26) seemed to be doing a cart census. inspecting each purchase.

We got home, threw a turkey in the oven and have provisions ready in case the power goes out.

Was I the only one who thought to buy a few gallons of water? Freddies was fully stocked.

Went to Ballard Market this afternoon. People were parked anywhere they could fit their cars!. Not only that, but I waited in line for 50 minutes for 13 items. It was a lot of fun.

Thankfully I did not witness any of the rudeness, though someone in front of me apparently got an earful when she tried to use the express checkout (she only had 5 items, so why people gave her a bad time, I'm not sure).

ZOMG I can't imagine being in that chaos.
Last shopping wknd before xmas + end of the world storm = perfect storm at Fred Meyers

Whole Foods on 65th was delightful!
  • I was in QFC in Wallingford around noon today and it was packed. Not quite as bad as the photos above, but the checkout line stretched the width of the store.

what's really sick is that the people that fight for a spot up close or park illegally just came from the gym. where's the hypocrisy in that? walking is exercise duh! true idiots. oh, and the guy that parked in the handicapped because there were not other spots. guess what, he was far from being handicapped; at least physically.

went to safeway on market around 5pm not having any idea it would be the madhouse it was.

every check stand had a line going up the respective aisle at least 25 people in line. i couldn't believe it. never seen anything like it.

so we went the way of the green market too and just got the essentials.

    absolutely nuts.

OMG that is my boyfriend standing next to a woman in the second pic! He said he was...

I went to Safeway at 5pm & it was very full, barely any carts left & a long line down every aisle. I just really took my time shopping (buying a full week's worth of groceries) and the lines were down to about 5 people per lane when I checked out after 6pm. The store was short some items in produce (all the brocolli gone???) but I had no other problems finding what I needed. I'm just glad I wasn't waiting to just buy a few items; I didn't mind waiting since I knew I wouldn't have to be back for a while! The guy bagging my groceries even helped me get them all in my car.

Went to the 7-11 on 32nd and Seaview, no problemo. Saw Grub picking up some fried goodies from the roller as well as a 12 pack of Zima.

Chud: 7/11 is for yuppies (they sell wine afterall).

I go to the Murder Mart on 65th and 8th.....home of true white trash.
  • i went to ballard market around 12:30. it was quite crowded and the lines were long, but they seemed stocked on staples and everyone i saw was being neighborly, so it was quite a bit less stressful than it could have been.

i thought freddies at 1030 this morning was bad. i am glad i went early.

Safeway was fiiiiine at 12:00 PM
  • I work at the Sunset Hill Green Market, and let me tell you, for us, the snow is a blessing. Keep it comin', Seattle!

That dood has two cases of Brown Shugga. I'm glad he's thinking about the essentials.

I had no problems at Greenwood Market at 4:30pm. Parking was easy and the lines were short there.

Yo, Greenmarket folks; does EVERYTHING have to be organic/veggie? I had to buy some mayo and that Canola Mayo is nasty! Why not a jar or two of Best Foods?
  • eM
we were at ballard marlet around 3 pm - it was crowded and the lines were long, but everyone was completely relaxed about it. it was quite pleasant considering how it could have been - and now I know everything I never cared to ask about Brangelina!

We hit Ballard Market about 11:30 and yes, it was jammed. While the lines were insanely long, everyone was friendly and joking about "the blizzard".

Worst case scenario - I figure I can always live on junk food and beer from the 7-11 down the street. I'll just call it college revisited.

Just a friendly request from a grocery store employee: I know the stores are crazy and chaotic right now, but if there was ever a time to spread a little holiday cheer, it's now.

Many of us grocers have been asked to work overtime, covering shifts of our coworkers who can't make it through the snow. While we are all very grateful for the business, the non-stop stream of customers is physically and mentally exhausting. Your smiles are appreciated, as well as your understanding and patience! Truly, a huge thank you to all of you who have been polite and friendly over the last few days!

I had to work from 8am to 8pm on Thursday... yikes!
  • candice.
    Are people really this unprepared?!

I mean, you're really only going to be stuck for a few days at the most. We've got soup, oatmeal and other random foods in our pantry to last us for weeks. And that's just a normal stocked pantry!

    Jeez... folks. Calm down!
  • Hey Dox - thanks for making it to work and helping us cope! You rock!
  • Dox
    Aw, thanks Silver!

It's pretty hilarious how much Seattle freaks out when it snows. I grew up in Ohio and people won't believe me when I say that they probably wouldn't even close the schools with this amount of snow. The reason for that is that Seattle seems to have almost no plows and I have yet to see a salt truck! No matter how bad the road is, run a plow up and down and put down enough salt and it will be totally clear in under an hour. Just drive slow, avoid big hills and you'll be fine.

I work at Whole Foods downtown and we have not seen ANY of the craziness everyone is talking about. As a matter of fact the store has been absolutely dead for the last few days. However I have noticed the 'emergency' purchases going up - people buying lots of frozen/dry food and gallons of water. I like to joke with people and ask if this is their 'armageddon water'. Usually gets a chuckle...

Oh and I wanted to reply to Skiff's comment (#3). You have obviously never worked in a grocery store. If I 'kept my head down and worked' moving grocery items from one end of a scanner to the other without talking for 12 hours I would kill myself. Joking with coworkers and cusotmers is all we have on days like that to keep from going nuts. Get over it man, we are human beings too. You gotta make a job that shitty fun!! And even if it did cost you an extra 10 minutes - what would you really have done if you had that time back?
