Ballard awakens to deep snow, more ice

Posted by Geeky Swedes on December 21st, 2008

11:30 a.m. update: It’s on-again, off-again for the snow this morning. This is the first official day of winter and so far we have 4 to 7 inches of snow on the ground. We drove down 24th and Market St and both were slow-going. We’re still making our way around Ballard and will update road conditions soon.

This is 80th St. near 19th Ave., shot by My Ballard reader David, who says there are essentially no cars on the road.

And this is 19th Ave. looking like a photo out of the Midwest. “Most snow I’ve ever seen at one time in Ballard in all my 11+ years of living in this town,” wrote RoyalBacon on Twitter via our Ballard wire. There have even been a couple snowmobile sightings on Ballard streets.

Here on 24th near 67th, this Metro bus is stuck, which should give you an idea of the road conditions (thanks Damon for the photo!) The freezing rain created a icy crust on top of the snow and making even the plowed roads treacherous to drive. If you’re thinking about heading to the airport, many flights are canceled this morning. The Ballard library, however, is open from noon to 5 p.m.

This is 3rd Ave. near 85th (thanks Brian for the pic!) We’ll keep updating My Ballard through the morning, but please post your own reports in comments below and send photos to tips@myballard.com.

and remember to shovel your sidewalks. if you get it done before several people walk on it, it's much easier. it's a great way to get out and talk to your neighbors or better yet, shovel for them if they can't. it's a great holiday gift.....
  • I just added a bunch of photos to the pool taken at my house on 3rd, near 85th. Some are from Snow #1, and more are from this morning - some are very similar views, so you can see the difference from a few days ago.

    P.S.
    It is snowing again.
  • The 17 and 28 buses are not running as of 11:30 am today. But it looks like the 15 and 18 are running, but only as far North as 85th. The 44 is running its full route, should you need to get to the U District. Up to date info here.
  • It's snowing again!!!!

Plenty of skis and laundry basket sleds outside my window this morning...

I haven't driven today, but the corner of Market and 15th has a steady stream of traffic going N-S and E-W and they don't seem to have any problems. Furthermore, a snow plow was plowing Market St going E-W from 15th just moments ago.

It seems like the city had done a good job of plowing & deicing the major roads the past few days and they've been fairly drivable before this last round of snow, does anyone know how they are now? Aurora, I-5, Market, 85th, 15th, etc.?

    Thanks!

Anyone know how well 17/18/15, etc are running? We're going to try and get to the Hawks game...

Hi Royal, we added your Twitter name. Thanks for the bon fire link...

I walked to Ballard Ave and saw that The Ballard Farmer's Market is open for business today. Some of the vendors are still setting up, but most of them are there.
  • Ep
Okay meatheads, here's your chance. You have that huge 4x4 truck. Now's the time to drive it around the city like an asshole.
  • Speaking of 3rd NW, I live on it, and the few people I have seen driving down it this morning are going WAY TOO FAST. Slow down. People are trying to walk to the store, and there will be kids out playing in the snow. You'll get where ever you are going a lot faster if you DON'T hit someone or something.
  • Thanks to My Ballard for the unattributed quote in your post above! Thought you might also like to see that there was a contained bon fire last night on Dibble between 75th & 77th. I love Ballard. http://twitpic.com/uys2
  • While I was walking up 24th last night around midnight, I saw a group of 30-somethings ambush unsuspecting cars that drove by with snowballs, a gang of guys standing on a corner got me right in the back with a snowball, and an older woman hanging out of an SUV drove by and yelled something I shouldn't say...what is it about snow that makes people turn into children and harass strangers?

    It's amazing I love it!

There were two snowmobiles doing at least 50 on 65th past 32nd last night. Um, Rupali, I would think that it might be hard for the people who own and run the shops on Market to get to work today; and I feel very for all of the merchants who are loosing business because of the snow. I had a book signing today that isn't going to happen. Before I headed out I would call the stores I planned to viisit to see if they are open. Who knows; we might get a warm front of rain on Christmas Eve and all the snow will disappear. Or not, as the case may be.

As I used to tell my boss: "I have a $500 deductible on my car insurance, and I don't get paid $500 a day."
  • Evan
Man - saw that snowmobiler last night race past the 74th street alehouse at probably 50 MPH on greenwood. Long straight and deserted was all he needed to hear.

Also saw some folks snowboarding down 74th street, with an SUV as a lift. They rode along on the tailgate, got to the top of the hill - jumped out and boarded down. Then the SUV followed. Pretty cool!

(it was nice to be sipping a Jolly Roger inside...)
  • It is beautiful outside but does anybody know if any of the stores on Market will be open? I still need to get some shopping done!
  • Finley Ridgeman
Near Market Street some places have almost six inches while some areas (tops of poles, telephone lines, some small branches on trees) mysteriously have only a couple of inches. I'm starting to think the whole thing is a hoax.
  • MK
b lite - Make sure you tip that guy well!
  • Karen Anderson
More than 5 inches here (Sunset Hill, just above Shilshole) with drifts. The crust on the snow scared the cats, who walked out a few steps, then sunk in, panicked, and had to be rescued. Be careful with pets -- they need to have paths dug for them.

I woke up at 5 am and was looking out the window at the beautiful snow when I saw a car drive up. It was my newspaper delivery guy whom I did not expect with this weather. What great service!
  • seattlec2
We have 5+ inches in the yard, with a thin crusty layer of ice on top, near Ballard Market. Beautiful!
