Plows hard at work in Ballard

Posted by Geeky Swedes on December 21st, 2008

Update 10:30 p.m. We’re seeing a break in the snow right now, but the Weather Service says we should see another band move through before morning (keep an eye on Doppler here). We just took another unofficial measurement: 3 inches of new snow for a total of 8.25 inches of accumulation here in East Ballard. Other areas, such as West Ballard, have as much as 9 inches or more. As for the morning commute, “If you don’t have to drive, please avoid being out on the roads,” said Alex Wiggins with SDOT. Sounds like good advice.

All of SDOT’s plows have been working through the night. This one is on 80th St., which is a “secondary” route according to the SDOT map. Again, the side streets are treacherous, with an icy crust over heavy snow. We’ve even started having some trouble getting around in our 4WD vehicle.

Despite all the plowing (this is 15th Ave.), the city will cancel waste collection in the morning. They’ll pick it up on Tuesday. And Metro is still offering limited service along arterial routes, and they said they’ll update the route changes online here at 4 a.m. Microsoft’s Connector routes are canceled.

We’re starting to see a few “wires down” 911 calls, due to the heavy snow. And Bella sent us this photo of a tree on 3rd Ave. near 90th leaning precariously over the roadway. A few hours later, it was cut down.

One note of warning for anyone who has left a car along a major route, like here on 15th. The snow pushed from the plows is beginning to pile up on the side, which will make extracting a car especially challenging.

This is in the Loyal Heights area with the snow still falling. We noticed a quite a few cross-country skiers out and about, even late into the night.

A serene shot from Olympic Manor. It’s hard to see where the street ends and the sidewalks and front lawns begin.

And this home on 80th looks like it’s been transported to the North Pole. Remember to enjoy the snow and have a happy holidays!

Please let us know what’s happening on your block in comments…

The picture of the snowed in car on 15th is my car! It took about a half hour to dig it out this morning but now it's around the block. Good times!

Here's a link about 4wd vehicles in snow:

Oops! That should be "won't do."
  • Judy
One more thing that a 4wd don't do is get you to your destination when the road is blocked by other idiots who have no business being on the roads. When that happens your 4wd becomes part of the problem and you are also stuck.

Only in Ballard, after seven or eight inches of snow, would someone want to know if their garbage was going to be picked up ;)

    Uh, probably not.

And as for the 4WD vehicles, you should be aware of two things:

    1) they won't help you on ice or in a free-slide.

    2) with all due respect, they don't teach you to drive in snow and ice. You should read up on it a little. I've seen 4WD vehicles roar and spin while the idiot at the wheel floors the pedal to try to get his car or truck to move. Deadly stupid.

If you have had a lot of in-town winter weather driving experience and adhere to all safety precautions, I applaud you. If you haven't had that experience, my heartfelt suggestion to you is that you educate yourself, and travel slowly, sticking to main roads as much as you can.

    Good luck.

Hmm. The snowball fight is tempting! Just don't pelt my 11 month old!

    5" before the crust, 3" after. 58th and 9th.

Just glad that Crash Landing was still open this afternoon. A taste of happiness in a sea of difficulty.

My drive home from Fremont was uneventful, punctuated by the clearly plowed road on Market. Driving 8th Ave was difficult but not impossible.

I have a 4WD vehicle, which made it easier, and I've been playing a lot of Mario Kart for Wii, so the slipping and sliding is easy to deal with. Sounds silly, but it really is pretty good training for these conditions.

@Nina: I think I'm telecommuting, either from my home office or the BF's office in Ballard. Anyone else up for noonish?
  • Roy Hobbs
@marywit - funniest thing I've read in a long time.
  • How about a snowball fight at 12pm tomorrow where market, Leary, and 22nd Ave NW meet, on the Market side of the little triangular park on the bricked section of concrete?

I imagine most will be home from work and out to get lunch anyway. This might also help the get some lunch time business to the restaurants in the area.

I would be happy to put it on (or someone else) on Seattle LiveJournal.

Just got back from another nice walk through the 'hood. It sure is purty. However, there is a bus stuck in the northbound lane on 8th Ave. near 63/64th.

Commute? What commute? People are being strongly urged to stay home...unless it is to get out and spend money on a professional sports team. A lot of businesses (schools, gov't, etc.) are closed or telecommuting.

Yes, a myballard snowball fight is in order followed by a visit to a pizza joint.

Frank, just look outside, that's your confirmation. :-)

where is the garbage postponed link? I cannot find anything confirming the delay?

Left my apartment in west ballard at 6:30am to go to work. It was a crazy day trying to get around the city, so I really enjoyed the beautiful and peaceful walk home from 85th down to 56th. When I got home, my morning footprints were covered with snow and my poor home looks like it's been eaten by a giant snow drift!

P.S. I am so in need of a giant snowball fight ... even if I have to build a snow tunnel to get out of my apartment to do it!
  • Looks like someone disregarded the possibility of the city getting ticced off and cut that tree anyway. I have no reason to think it was the city, as the big chunk that was cut off is still out there, it has just been dragged out of the road.
I'm glad, as I was pretty sure the snow would cover it and drift around it enough that it would just become another white lump that someone wouldn't see against more white.

*looks at where MaryWit lives, throws on her scarf & shoes*

I say we organize a myballard snowball fight tomorrow night. Get everyone's cabin fever & pent up frustration out in one shot.
  • Here is a picture of the tree actually in the road that I took a few minutes ago:
    http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3200/3127385596_...

You can see where the break is - I think that is directly above where the sidewalk would be if there were one, so the tree is in the parking lane and in southbound lane of traffic.

Whoops, I have been saying North. It is on the west side of the street!
  • MaryWit
Oh yes! There IS chocolate! A Seattle Chocolate meltawaymint bar!

    Om-nom-nom-nom...
  • MaryWit
Can't take it any longer...severe case of cabin fever...breaking into Christmas gift left by neighbor for watching her cats...pretty sure there is chocolate in one....

Curbside pickup will be delayed one day in Seattle, and canceled for residential customers elsewhere in the county.
  • chelsea!
Whoops, posted that before I refreshed the page.

We've got 8.75 inches here on the deck in W. Ballard - probably a good 2.75 inches down to the ice crust.
  • chelsea!
Anyone hear about garbage service tomorrow?
  • I posted this in the forum too (in two places, and on Phinneywood) -
We have a tree partially down in the northbound portion of 3rd Ave NW, just north of NW 90th.
Someone said the city said to leave it alone, so it may be there awhile.
Sorry to post about it so much, but it's quite close to my house, and I would hate to see someone crash trying to avoid it because they are going too fast.

For most of today the only traffic on our icy snowy street in West Ballard were squirrels making little squirrel-shaped holes as they leaped around. Then a pickup went through and ruined the snowy perfection. :) Now those tire tracks are slowly filling in with falling/drifting snow.

7:30 and it's still snowing here in East Ballard.

We're going to have to dig out our snowman at this rate!
  • milo dakkat
Wooo-hooo! Big snow in Ballard/Seattle! Can't go nowhere. Can't do nuthin'...
'cept slow down, relax, and enjoy the snowy neighborhood. Keep snowing baby!
  • MaryWit
5:50. It's still snowing. I'm on NW 57th, near 26th NW. It's so quiet, compared to last night and earlier today when people were walking/skiing/sledding around. Nothing is moving outside except the falling snow. I haven't seen a car drive down the street in a couple of hours. That's good, as the streets are so narrow, with cars parked along both sides, even in good weather there isn't much wiggle room for cars driving down the street. Snow is up to the doors on parked cars now.

Stay safe. Stay warm. Happy Solstice!
