Workers dismantling Austin Cantina

Posted by Geeky Swedes on January 2nd, 2009

My Ballard reader Padraic sent us an email this morning explaining that workers are disassembling the interior of Austin Cantina on 24th Ave.

Sure enough, we stopped by, and it looks like the Tex Mex restaurant has closed for good. A worker told us that other businesses are looking at the space.

The tables are gone, and workers are cleaning the interior. Chef and owner Jefe Birkner warned last month that the restaurant may not make it beyond the holidays after business declined sharply with the economy.

Listen up"Ballard Girl"-you can say what you will about the food and prices( presuming you ever actually ate there) but watch what you say about the service. I was born and raised in this part of town and always served customers with a warm heart and smile. Perhaps you should read through the feedback about the service on all restaurant review sites because 90 percent of it was positive, and I served our guests 90 percent of the time. Be kind, karma is a bitch.

economy??? I think that may have been a contribuintg factor, but they had plenty of feedback about their food, staff and price of drinks to improve lopng ago. I wish they would have listened more, and remained...

I totally agree its unfortunate to see any local business go down...perhaps the owner will give it another go sometime in the future...anyway...whatever goes in there I hope its good.

I'm kind of sorry to hear about this. We ate there once, and while what food we got was very good, there wasn't much of it, and we had to practically beat the well-fed server over the head in order to get it. And the coffee we were served was horrible!

Still, it's very sad when local restaurants have to shut down.

YEAH...was there once and not compelled to return. Don't think we need another bar in Ballard unless it has a great burger for under $9....that is hard to come by. Actually I wouldn't mind another Mexican place in the style of Gorditos....big ...tasty...and relatively cheap.
  • I've got to agree with GB. I was unimpressed, and certainly didn't feel as if I got what I was paying for.

Too bad for the workers, though. They were very friendly.

I'm not surprised this place is going out of business. I wasn't really impressed w/the food and the menu. Bring on another bar or restaurant.
