Man with gun seen near Ballard High School

Posted by Geeky Swedes on January 9th, 2009

Update 12:15 p.m. David Tucker with Seattle Public Schools tells us that the scene is clear and the school is back to normal.

11:30 a.m. Seattle police are near Ballard High School because a man with a gun was seen in the area. According to David Tucker with Seattle Public Schools, the school is in “shelter in place” because of the police activity. “Shelter in place” means that classes continue but the hallways are kept clear and all but one entrance is secured. Police dispatch says the school does not appear to be a target in any way. (Thanks Steve for the tip!)

Actually the boy was sitting on the school premises with the gun. Not around the neighborhood.

Did you know open carry is actually legal in WA with a CPL permit? Obviously there are guidelines to where you can do it but, I bet a lot of you did not know that :)

Sign, only 40 years ago, kids were able to take their own guns to school. You know, put them in their locker so they could go hunting with them directly after school. Back in those days, school shootings were a lot less common too.

Its amazing how unamerican this country has become... putting kids in lockdown, calling the police just cause someone had a gun in the neighborhood?

What's next, gonna call the police cause someone had a shovel?

There's nothing wrong with guns or with people carrying them. In fact your far less likely to get randomly or accidentally shot by a citizen with a gun than a cop with a gun (cops are notorious for bad safety records with firearms, and also not having much training.)

People can walk around ballard, all day, with firarms concealed on their person, or strapped to their hip, without breaking any laws. Course that doesn't mean the cops (who don't know the law) won't shoot them....

Sigh, how pathetic, and what are you teaching the kids? To be scardy-cats?

One of those fine south side gangsters they bus up here for his own benefit?

    hot sauce,

I highly doubt the weapon was an "automatic", more likely "semi automatic".

Also a silver automatic could refer to anything. If I did not know we were talking about guns. It could be a toaster...

    MS13? The Salvadorean yuppie gang?

Apparently the “man with the gun” was a police officer…. AWKWARD

OK, so the kids are safe. What about us adults that live around the school? I guess we need to stay in lockdown too.

Off topic, I heard a rumor that there was an uncoming change in high-school assignments and people north of 65th would no longer be assigned to Ballard High school. Has anyone else heard about this?
  • jules
sounds like all is back to normal there i guess. looks like my nephew gets a free friday off from school. thank goodness it was all worked out.
  • jules
my sister is at the school dropping off my nephew for class and the police instructed her that the school was in "lockdown" and that they should leave and go back home for the remainder of the day today.

what a sad bummer. when will folks figure it out?....schools and guns don't mix. Kids and guns don't mix either. Yikes!
