Pet care store moving into Market St.

Posted by Geeky Swedes on February 1st, 2009

A building across from Ballard Blossom on Market St. has been boarded up for the last couple months, and now the boards are coming down.

When it opens in March, it will be All the Best Pet Care, a local chain of pet stores that specializes in nutrition and “the best of everything for dogs and cats.” The Ballard store will be its ninth location. (Thanks Stan for the photo!)

I've been getting my dog supplies at the All The Best Pet Care on Aurora and 135th, and I've always found their prices to be reasonable. Especially the raw bones in their freezer. They have an in-house brand of beef marrow bones that come in a value pack and keep my dog's teeth sparkling clean. I was hoping they'd open a store in Ballard.

I shop at Crown Hill Pet Supply, All the Best Pets charges $12 more per bag on my dog's specialty food. So ridiculous. Plus, Crown Hill has parking.

For a while there we had quite a list of "'n" stores in ballard. Stuff 'n things, kitchen 'n things, and... shoot, now I can't remember the rest.

Wrong--it was west of the Majestic Bay.
  • BB
The store to the east of the majestic bay, which occupied the spaces now occupied by La Tienda and Cupcake Royal, had the best name EVER for a pet store......Stuff'N'Things for Pets.

All the best in lake city is a great store, they're local, family owned and have great prices, friendly and knowledgeable staff. I've always hoped they would open a store in Ballard!

Jules who posts here from time to time wrote a book on Ballard's history. She would know where to find photos of downtown Ballard.

    Alonzo:
Crown Hill Pet Food store is a great great place! i have gone there for years now for my dog needs! i also love the All The Best in the Madison neighborhood. They are very knowledgeable about their products and love to talk pets!

Bark is nice too, but, i have found that the prices are a bit high as well.

Another pet sote should be fun....:)

Bark is not exactly a "meow" type of store. I think I bought 1 collar there and that's all. Last time I was in it was way too crowded with people and large dogs that the owners were not controlling very well. I usually shop at Mud Bay on Phinney or Crown Hill Pet Foods, both have great selections of foods, etc., and are well priced, often less (by several dollars) than what Petco charges for the same things.

I know it might be a bit out of the way for some of you, but Crown Hill Pet Food and Supply (90th & Holman Road) is a great store. They have a wonderful supply of healthy/organic foods for all kinds of pets at reasonable prices. I have found the staff to be helpful and friendly.

I stopped shopping at Bark when I tried to return 2 T-shirts I'd bought 15 minutes before and they wouldn't give me a refund. They did give me a store credit that went into an index box behind their counter. They wouldn't give me a copy so right then and there I used it on food and never went back. How was I to know it wasn't going to disappear from the box and I had nothing to prove they owed me $40. To top it off, they were rude about it! I make a point to spend my money locally, have for 20 years, but I'm not spending my money where I'm tried badly. I've been shopping at Petapollza(sp?) in Fremont, nice folks.

The owner of the bulding refuses to have any restraunts or cofee shops in the building. Yes!!!

I am just relieved that this isn't going to be another pizza place!

I don't remember an All the Best. There was a great pet shop to the right of the Bay Theatre for many years. It had a carousel design to their sign. Run by two sisters and other family members.

There was an All The Best Pets on Market that closed a few years ago. It was a good store, and cat-friendly.

I used to think that Bark being a small business justified their prices, but then I found out they have the same distributor as Zak & Zoe - where my cat food is $3-$4 less a bag.
  • Bark isn't really 'pro-cat' so this is a very nice addition!!
  • kim
with all the cats in ballard this is a welcome store i'd bet.

I like Bark--the people, the products and the shop itself, but can rarely afford to shop there. It might be hard for a small business to get the same wholesale prices as bigger ones who can place larger orders for bulk discounts. I'll definately check out the new place, but also wish for Bark's continued success.

I'm excited! I have been driving up to Phinney Ridge to buy my cat food and treats. I have always found Bark to be a little expensive. It's also great to see that a local business is doing well enough to open another location!
  • MGHart
Ugh. Not good news for Bark. I've always liked Bark best...a nice little boutique, and local Ballard establishment.
  • Bethany
Maybe the competiton will force Bark to come down on their prices.

One of my new favorite stores is Zak & Zoe up on Phinney Ridge. Their food prices are cheaper than Bark's, but the main reason I like it is that the staff and the owner are much friendlier. I found great gifts there over the holidays.
