City rolls out bike racks, Ballard coming soon

Posted by Geeky Swedes on February 2nd, 2009

The city installed its first on-street bicycle rack today on Capitol Hill — it’s about the size of a car and holds eight bikes at a time (photo). SDOT plans to add more racks in coming months with the goal of having “one to two per neighborhood.” We checked with Craig Benjamin at Sustainable Ballard, who headed up the Ballard Bike Rack Design Contest last summer, and he said work is expected to begin soon on the first custom-designed bike rack for Ballard.

“We’ve had to do some back and forth to get the design specifications for the first (the “rings”) rack nailed down,” he wrote (sketch shown above). “SDOT’s been great to work with, it’s just taking some time.” We’ll let you know when the first Ballard bicycle rack is unveiled.

    Yeah, go bike racks!
I do miss that Googie design, though.
It'd look great right next to the corner where nothing is.
  • Bike racks are good! I think we need more than just 1 or 2 per neighborhood though. Build it, and they will come.

Thanks for the support everyone, we'll try to get them done as soon as we can.

I use a Kryptonite U lock and I have a small bike so tubular racks with lots of options for a place to lock onto work best for me, especially if I'm trying to put the lock through the front wheel as well as the frame.
