Chipotle Grill coming to Ballard Blocks

Posted by Geeky Swedes on February 6th, 2009

A new business will soon be joining Trader Joe’s and LA Fitness at Ballard Blocks. My Ballard reader “mijolm” posted this photo in the forum:

We’re told by MyBallard reader Jamie, who coincidentally does PR for Chipotle, that the new restaurant is being built with “environmentally responsible building design.” The sustainable features include everything from recycling to “an energy management system that helps monitor energy consuming equipment, ventilation and control lighting.” The restaurant is tentatively slated to open in June. (Thanks mijolm for the photo and tip!)

Qdoba is by far the superior option when it comes to fresh, Mexican cuisine.

    Fair enough, I suppose.

It just seems like common sense to me to look at a menu before ordering if it's a different restaurant, but if she's a kid, I understand.
  • Maria
Silence I seldom look at the menu at McDonalds when I order a Big Mac. I don’t think that is unusual. It is also not unusual for a young girl who grew up in a different area of the country to assume that Taco Bell is universal. I found it amusing and so did she once she was over the shock.

BTW McDonalds’s serves green chile on burgers in many areas of the southwest also as does Dairy Queen. As I said, chains know their customer base.

Do they serve green bean burritos, or did your daughter request one without looking at the menu?
  • Maria
A green bean burrito is a bean burrito with green chile. In other areas of the country you can get either red or green on your food at Taco Bell.
  • O
Maria there's no such thing as a green bean burrito. Perhaps your daughter should have asked for a "black bean and green burrito".
  • Maria
Swass we are just disappointed is all that there are not better restaurants around.

O there are no green beans in a green bean burrito.
  • O
That dirty haired "clerk" should have run out to Whole Foods and bought some green beans -especially for your daughter. How dare he say they don't have green beans!?

    Geeeeeez Folks

If you don't like it, don't go.
  • M
Chipotle is deceptive. They advertise that they're all organic and grain-fed and healthy, but they are far from it. More sodium in the veggie burrito than you need in a week!
  • Maria
I refuse to put anything in my body that comes from a place using the term chipotle. In many other areas of the country Taco Bell actually has better Mexican food. They know their market and sell accordingly. I recall my daughter trying to order a green bean burrito here in Seattle and the dirty haired clerk saying they don’t put green beans in their burritos.

The chicken soft taco lite at Taco Time is delicious!

    Just sayin'.

Is there any truth to the rumor that a Red Robin is slated to go in Ballard Blocks also?
I'm not a huge Chipotle fan, but it has to be better than Taco Time!
  • Kevin,

    But I bought SBUX at 20something... :(
  • Kevin
If you sold 5 shares of SBUX at $10.54 you could become a shareholder of Chipolte! (CMG $51.31)

Boy, am I out of it today! I breezed the headline earlier and have been thinking all day that Chipotle is coming to Ballard LOCKS. Now I realize why it didn't make sense.

I need to find my brain this weekend.

Kelly, my mistake, channel four ran a lynnwood piece last week and said that it had closed. Thanks.
  • kim
    b lite--

why the move? i'm from there as well....
  • kim
    Yeah!!!!
  • Kelly
    @js
I've been to the Lynnwood Chipotle twice this week. I think you are mistaken.

Jeanne: sorry i was typing fast I was being silly so swap the ia with ai and see if you can get it. Really if i wanted food that tasted the same as food I can get in Topaka it wouldn't make sense to pay to live in a city like Seattle. I guess the nice thing about Chipotle moving in is that we will have another choice for very un-Mexican Mexican food. Having Taco time, taco bell and TAco Del Mar is a good ying to the Mcdonalds, Burger King, Wendys yang. The funny thing is i shouldn't knock Bellevue, they have a lot of good food there. But really at this point in time, besides being near salt water Ballard does == Bellevue.

I will submit to my new condo overlords and prepare my exit from Ballard.
  • Taco Del Mar is gross !!!
  • Annamatopoetry
The question that comes to mind is why? Ballard already has plenty of good food options of the real variety.
  • Jeanne
I've never heard of Chipotle Mexican Grill, but if it means a shorter line at the Ballard Paseo, I could not be happier. SERIOUSLY!

Iloveseatown, what does "chianification" mean? Merriam-Webster does not list such a word.
  • Fnarf
Good lord, Chilpotle's makes Taco Del Mar look good. This is nasty mall food, people.
  • js
The lynnwood chipotle closed last month.
  • JulieFlyAway
    It never closed!
  • Iloveseatown
yay for the chianification of Ballard!!!

soon it will feel just like Bellevue squeee!!!!!
  • Vin
@Neighbor You've obviously never been to the location in Redmond if you think Chipolte is dependent on foot traffic.
  • Kelly
    I have a Chipotle addiction. :-(

There is currently one in the U-District and one at Northgate. I also frequent one in Lynnwood which is convenient to my job location. Can't resist. And now more convenient. Sigh...
  • Ah good, they aren't owned by McDonald's anymore.
  • NAG
Please tell me they serve beer and margaritas.
  • candice.
Go get yer'self a nice wet burrito after 45 on the eliptical!
  • James
I remember seeing this article and about fell off my chair. I love their chicken burritos.

  • Neighbor
Great. I hope grocery-shoppers and gym rats love their burritos.
  • seattlemuse
@neighbor: I think foot traffic will be aplenty with TJ's and a gym opening nearby. oh, and a thousand new condo dwellers, too.
  • Neighbor
Isn't there one of these on University Ave? And don't they rely on foot traffic -- which is incredibly sparse in this part of Ballard? What a boner for this franchisee.
  • Vin
    Excellent news!!!
  • Asbjorn
Chipotle is my least favorite Mexican restaurant. B Lite, I think you're going to be disappointed at their prices.
  • Surly
I was just thinking the other day that we don't have enough chain restaurants in downtown Ballard!
  • This is the best news since Trader Joes!
  • Katie
    That is the BEST news!!!!
  • b lite
Yay! I've missed Chipotle since I moved here from Denver 5 years ago. I hope its as fresh and inexpensive as I remember.
