Swedish gets approval for 5-story addition

Posted by Dale on February 13th, 2009

Swedish Medical Center in Ballard has gotten approval from the Seattle Department of Planning and Development for a sizable addition on the north side of the building. Here’s the description on the permit request

Land Use Application to allow a 109,000 sq. ft. addition to an existing hospital (Swedish Medical Center, Ballard Campus). Project includes 35,060 sq. ft. of hospital and 74,263 sq. ft. of office. Parking for vehicles will be provided within the existing 510 stalls on campus. Project also includes a 62 ft. X 12 ft. skybridge.

The project can still be appealed to the hearing examiner through Feb. 26.

The majority of the people SMC laid off were VPs/directors/managers, from what I heard. The current CEO realizes that the Ballard Campus is important, and that expansion of services is necessary (unlike the previous regime, who claimed "Ballard's growth is stagnant" and closed departments or consolidated services on 1st Hill).

I think Ballard had one manager that was laid off, but otherwise, the campus appears to have been left alone.

    Yeah!
The ER doctors and nurses at Ballard saved my son's life a couple of years ago - very astute diagnostitians.
I thank that group of old time Ballard residents who created a guild and who went door to door asking neighbors to do their part in creating the original Ballard Hospital.... I thank Swedish for continueing to see the compelling community need for this facility today and in the future.

    "sorry if thats TMI"

No worries, T-Rex - we're all friends here. LOL

My understanding is that Swedish had layoffs, but not at the Ballard location.

Will they be adding condo's and quizno's as well? Maybe another Zaw pizza or wine bar?

I too am happy about this but didn't they just have lay-offs....anyway they took great care of me in 2006 when I had to go in and have a section of my colon cut out
    (sorry if thats TMI) ;-)
...Yeah for the Swede's in Ballard!!

agree completely, robert. with health care margins getting squeezed, I was concerned swedish would reconsider their investment in ballard they had previously announced. good news to hear - and will pull-through good construction jobs as well.

Nice to have Swedish confirming their long-term commitment to Ballard this way.

I'm excited about this too. It means we might actually get a sexy modern building in Ballard. Looks like Seattle firm NBBJ is the architect, and they do nice work when it comes to public buildings.

So don't expect any pointless brick veneer or "lighthouses" on this one.

Excellent! The deserted Cytolab building looks so sad; it will be nice when it's gone. And it will also be great to have a new ER. Hopefully with adequate space (& nursing staff) to triage patients before they get registered.

But does anyone know where is the skybridge going - between the new building and the main hospital, or between the new building and the parking garage?
