Ballard, Greenwood businesses hit by burglars

Posted by Geeky Swedes on February 16th, 2009

Three Ballard businesses and a Crown Hill coffee stand have been hit by burglars in the last ten days. In Greenwood, three other businesses have been hit. It’s unclear if they’re connected, but it’s enough to motivate some local businesses to circulate an email warning about the break-ins.

The most recent Ballard burglary occurred at the Taco Time on Market St. early on February 11th. A burglar pried open the drive-thru window and cut open the safe, according to a police report. Just down the street on the same night, a burglar broke into what appears to be Limback Lumber. A few days earlier, Source Salon on Leary. And Chicka Latte on Holman Road was burglarized, as well. In Greenwood, Neptune Coffee, Makeda Coffee and Strut all report burglaries. In nearly all the cases, burglars used sheer force to break through a door, making off with money from the cash register or safe.

I don't shop or eat at any of those places but I go to other places in Greenwood all the time. This hopped-up criminal activity is not good news. The thieves ar awfully bold -- it takes time to cut through a heavy metal safe. The proprieters of these businesses need to invest in good alarm systems, at the very least. Hopefully, the tripped alarms will give police time to get there before the burglars break into the safes.

Why do these businesses have cash in their registers or safe? They should always deposit it on the same day...always.

The businesses usually have some relatively small amount of petty cash that is kept on hand to open the day with (for change in the register). It's impractical to go to the bank every day before the store opens just to get a little starting cash.

Definitely a brazen burglar to take the time to saw/drill open a small safe. Alarms sound like a good idea.
  • I walked by The Source the other day and there was a patched up window. All fixed now, though. Patty's Pan had a broken window at one point that said they had "delicious -arian" food.

Last year, MyBallard.com ran a security camera photo of a burglar at Zestos on 65th St. Was that person caught or is he still working the neighborhood?

i don't know if it is the same people, but two guys broke the glass at picolinos last night. this set off the silent alarm to the police. they then set off the motion sensor alarm which caused them to run. the police arrived just in time and caught them. the whole thing was caught on tape.

let's hope these are the same people

Just last night I was up in Greenwood and heard that Lemon Meringue had also been hit. Anyone know more ? It sounded like it happened in the daytime, but I'm not sure.

It is still against the law to break and enter isn't it? While keeping money in a register might not be a "good idea", it's NOT against the law. Blaming a business for this is silly. Where are those 100,000 cops we were all promised a few years ago? Time for more to protect their own stuff. Calling 911 does bring a person with a gun though.

Well according to Reuven Carlyle, we need to start releasing non violent criminals. You know, because they've been 'reformed'.

"Well according to Reuven Carlyle, we need to start releasing non violent criminals. You know, because they’ve been ‘reformed’."

Is that you John Burbank? Just kidding, John's got more sense than that.
I agree with Reuven that we don't need to be locking up kids who smoke pot, or the dad that didn't pay his child support so we can make room for the guy who shot a couple people and a dog with an Uzi, but we do need to draw the line somewhere. Statistically a lot of burglars are rapists who haven't had the opportunity yet as last year's case in Wallingford has shown.
As much as I hate car prowlers, after half their sentence is completed with good behaviour I'd be fine with letting them serve out double the remaining time with an ankle bracelet and a curfew after dark. Leave the house and back to the big house. Ankle bracelets and monitoring cost a tiny fraction of incarceration and will keep those offenders from committing the same crime (or at least getting away with it). This will free up space for the burglars, muggers, and the rest of the threats to society.

  • I'm putting up a sign that says "NO CASH ON PREMISES." Is that enough of a deterrent?

What about "Only really crappy gadgets inside, you'll feel like an idiot" ?
