Hamburger Harry’s wants sidewalk dining

Posted by Geeky Swedes on February 20th, 2009

Summer is almost here, and Hamburger Harry’s on Market St. near 24th Ave. wants to take advantage of the sunny weather.

The hamburger joint has submitted a request to the city for a sidewalk cafe permit. The city is accepting comments through March 4th. Last summer, Mayor Nickels proposed reducing turnaround time for permits and relaxing requirements on businesses to encourage more outdoor seating. The city council passed the ordinance in October.

That section of sidewalk is technically a connection of the Burke-Gilman trail, so I hope the outdoor seating keeps the sidewalk wide enough to support all the forms of traffic that want to use it.

their burgers are actually very good - local, natural and tasty ingredients. their fries are fine if you like that bigger heartier style, of which i'm not a huge fan.

Ride your bike on the street, not the sidewalk.

Their burgers are horrible... Fries are delicious :)

This is just another maneuver by the Ballard business community to be an inconvenience to us bicyclists! Don't let them limit our access to all that can be ridden in Ballard!

I love European style street cafes too. All we need are actual European style cafes though.

Hamburger Harry's ain't no where near that good. Even eating curbside won't make their 'Food Services of America Inc.' food taste better.

Good idea...even though I don't think much of the burgers at this joint

Crappy thing is that they won't be able to serve alcohol out there. Can't serve it across the sidewalk, and the sidewalk is right in front of their place.

Hey Lazlo there is a map showing exactly where that is. Just south of the intersection of 48th and Ballard Ave.

Just noticed this land use while checking our the link.

Anybody know where this is exactly?

so cool, i love outdoor seating as well and hope to see more of it!
  • Wayne, you capture it beautifully. With the homogenizing of Seattle's neighborhoods, it'd be sweet if our Ballard was known for it's outdoor seating and smiling strangers. Hats off HamHarr!

    EVERYONE wants sidewalk seating.....

    Patio bars so rule...

I also support more sidewalk seating. The space in front of Hamburger Harry's is certainly large enough to support it. Hopefully, it will bring more life to the west side of 24th now that Archie's will be gone soon.

Also, thank you Geeky Swedes for proclaiming that summer is almost here!

I like the sidewalk dining in Ballard. Sometimes it makes the sidewalks so narrow that people actually have to smile at a stranger and say, "Excuse me" while they pass.
  • Did y'all send a supportive comment to the city? I did (even though I haven't eaten at Ballard's 116th hamburger joint). Just follow the "request" link above to the City's page.

    Ditto

    Agreed all around.

One of my favorite things about European and Latin American cities (especially Paris and Quito) is the ability to get food and a beverage (beer, wine, coffee) any time of the day (24/7 in some instances) at all sorts of sidewalk/plaza cafes. Seattle would do alright with the generous application of heat lamps and waterproof canopies in the cooler months, which would really liven up the streets.

Sidewalk dining brings life to the streets. The more the merrier!
