Planting party at Ballard Corners Park

Posted by Geeky Swedes on March 8th, 2009

The Ballard Corners Park is looking much more park-like after 40 or so volunteers blanketed the grounds in hundreds of plants on Sunday.

“We planted somewhere north of 600 plants and 200 bulbs and mulched around them all,” said organizer David Folweiler. The new park on 17th Ave. between 62nd and 63rd is coming together.

Ferns were planted in the rain gardens along 17th Ave. The grass is still not ready for foot traffic — the fence is expected to come down sometime this spring. Meanwhile, organizers say they still need funds for completion of phase 3 and ongoing maintenance. More details on the park’s website right here.

    David thanks for the info!
  • Thanks to all the neighbors that came out to help! We really appreciate it. You're a wonderful group of people and the work went quickly because of it.

The park will be open soon to all. Look for more information on our website.

We are hoping to honor all that have helped us and we need a bit more funding to create a park entry. Go to http://ballardcornerspark.org/ballardcornerspar... to learn how you can help create Ballard's newest park.

To 'waterless' - unfortunately, and as goofy as it looks, we will have to water/irrigate all the plants to make sure they establish themselves in the first few years. Ultimately, only the lawn will be watered, but newly established plants need extra water before we can hope that our winter rains will be enough to nourish them. Remember that our summers are relatively precipitation free, if not hot.

To jules - thanks for your support! We look forward to your continued appreciation of Ballard's newest park.

To Cole - We actually didn't take away any parking. What happened is that the roadway was narrowed by 5 feet to allow for the capture of stormwater in the raingardens. This helps prevent non-point source pollution (i.e. the little drops of oil from cars) from reaching Salmon Bay. It also allows the aquifer under Ballard to recharge as pollution is naturally filtered out by planting and healthy soil - similar to what might have existed before the paving of our urban environment. You'll still be able to park along park side of the street, although we'd encourage you to walk or ride to the park.

I am wondering why this park extends so far into the street and took away needed parking? Seems totally wasteful.
