Small fire at old Ballard firehouse

Posted by Geeky Swedes on March 25th, 2009

Updated: Firefighters raced to Ballard’s historic firehouse today after a report of a small fire in the kitchen. The lunchtime crowd at the Hi-Life was “gently asked to exit the building,” said My Ballard reader Seonaidh who emailed us this photo of fire crews entering the front of the building:

And Earnie sent us this photo of the ladder truck outside:

The fire turned out to be a small blaze in the hood of a range, which spit out a lot of smoke. Firefighters have since packed up and left. (Thanks for your tips!)

"if it was a ’small fire in the kitchen’, why the hook and ladder? "

Because a fire can spread VERY quickly. Ever heard the phrase "Better safe than sorry""??

BTW, if it was your place that was on fire I bet you wouldn't be so critical!

The ladder truck was deployed as a standard practice. The truck company's duties include getting to roof to prepare for ventilation, if necessary. Also, if the fire was in the kitchen hood/ duct system, the outlet for that duct is usually on the roof. BTW if you're looking for pretty boys, ya might want to chech the ambulances ;)

I had a couple of great meals there - and happy hour is priced right.

Has anyone ever had a great meal there?
    Not me...

I was in there a few months ago and we smelled something burning and it wasn't the food. It smelled more like an electrical fire. They called the fire department but we never heard the outcome and were able to finish our dinner. My dinner companion did note, though, that their electricity was running off some common circuits in a manner that isn't ideal.

if it was a 'small fire in the kitchen', why the hook and ladder? was there someone trapped upstairs or were they just practicing?

it seems like a lot of work setting up the outriggers and all. just wondering...

That place is a fortress. I remember the Motorhead concert there back in '98. If that didn't burn the place to the ground, nothing will.
