O’shan Sushi now open on 24th Ave.

Posted by Geeky Swedes on March 27th, 2009

Austin Cantina closed its doors in January, and since then Ballard’s fourth sushi spot has been moving into the restaurant space on 24th Ave near 58th St. This week, O’shan Sushi has opened for business.

“We truly are a family-owned, family-operated restaurant,” explains O’shan’s new website (which is still under construction.) “We’re not the biggest sushi restaurant in town, however we will strive to be the best; with affordable prices, great fresh food, and outstanding service.” O’shan is the third new sushi place to move into Ballard over the last several months.

Beyond sushi, O’shan features small plates and dinner plates as well. Takeout, too. It’s open from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and then 4:30 to 10 p.m. every weekday. On weekends, it’s open from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. If you stop by, please post a review in comments below…

I thought the restaurant was wonderful. They had a to do die for seared spicy albacore! Everything was great and the people were very friendly. Welcome to the 'hood!

Other ballard restaurant requests: bagel joint and gelato!

    Prices: great
    Service: good
    Tekka maki: so-so
Rainbow roll: great fish on top, bland filling
    Northwest salmon nigiri: fantastic

The little shop in the alley between Anchor Tattoo and Azteca, Pauline has a daily soup and roll deal.

I stopped by this weekend. Good sushi, not as cheap as Musashi's in Wallingford but better quality. The sockeye salmon sushi was buttery goodness. Chirashi had a good variety of fish in it.

Greasy spoon? I miss Denny's! Try the Smoke Shop - next best thing.

Yum, I had the $5 salmon roll, best deal $5 roll I can remember having. So fresh. I hope these are not introductory prices (for ex., when Monkey Bridge first opened they had amazingly low prices, then raised them a few weeks after they opened). Please please let them keep the $5 rolls - we really need cheap sushi in this economy!

My wife and I are regular shushi eaters as is our daughter, so we were excited to see O'Shans going in around the corner. We had dinner last night and we were both very impressed. If you are a sushi purist you won't be dissappointed. The ingredients are fresh and you don't find the ususal over reliance on wasabi. I prefer the delicate flavors of the fish and use wasabi very sparingly, so I definitely liked that. The udon was terrific. The tempura was very light and crisp and the sauce perfect. The black cod was also superb. All in all, we couldn't be more pleased and will be going back often.

I think Green Go Foods used Papyrus font also. :) It bugs me too, it seems silly to use a generic font from Microsoft Office.

Technically I think it's called a typeface, not a font. Ballard is being over run by sushi and Papyrus. Nothing inspires a rant from this cat more than bad typography (as Ms. Dakkat knows).

It would be nice if we could have a break from all the new Thai/Pizza/Sushi places and have something more unique. And how about some nice Clarendon or Gill Sans for a change?

I find sushi all presentation and no flavor. Very bland. To each his own of course and I wish them well but I would love to see a real deli in Ballard or a better breakfast place that the current offerings.

fish are sea kittens and we should not eat them
and this place is taking up space that can be used for a car park for homeless

In Bellvues it's called sushi, in Ballard it's called bait. That's all I have to say about that......

We had ice cream in Ballard too! I know it was, OMG, a chain (Ben and Jerry), but that didn't last to long. There is also wally's down on 28th.

I like sushi, but don't eat it that much. Most of the sushi business looks like it is under the control of the Unification Church and I just can't stand the idea of paying for sushi that winds up in the pocket of those deceitful nutjobs.

Yeah, I was sitting having coffee in Fremont a few years ago when I saw a truck from "True World" seafoods pull up and deliver to Blue C Sushi. Cross them off of my list. True World is one of the Moonie-owned local businesses.

A pretty good rundown of Moonie-owned businesses and front organizations can be found here:

Anyhow, it would be interesting to determine where O'Shan gets their fish. Who wants to ask?

I am so in agreement re: soup and ice cream in Ballard! Bring them on! (And I know, I know, Walter's does ice cream ... but I'm looking for the full-on experience.)
  • FontFairy
Yes, yes, Papyrus, it's the official unofficial font of Ballard. You'll have to forgive the FontFairy for being forgetful and bestowing usage of the same font multiple times. Just embrace the font ok, well not literally unless they were gigantic 3D characters like they have over at Ballard Blocks. FontFairy got way way vetoed on that one...grrrr....
  • I love the suggestion of things Ballard needs and agree wholeheartedly.
    Something Ballard does NOT need:
A vegetarian Thai place replacing Madame K's. I mean really?
  • I know the "pun" the folks are trying to make with the name - and they are succeding. I just can't shake the idea that it's an Irish restaurant.
  • Since their website isn't working yet, can anyone tell me if they will make their sushi offerings with brown rice upon request? What we DO need in Ballard is a sushi restaurant that will offer healthy alternatives to white rice.

We stopped in last night by chance it happened to be their opening. Our waitress recognized us but could not place us, until we confessed that we had lived in the Dexter and moved to Ballard recently. She remembered us from Sushi Bay.

My husband and I tried a couple of rolls and the chicken katsu. Before that we had miso and the tempura appetizer. I must say that the sauce for the tempura was absolutely perfect.

We learned that they had gotten a temporary liquor license the day before so they were uncertain if they would be opening this week or not. We saw the catapiller roll delivered to the table next to us. One of the kids asked his dad if that was a real catapiller to which he said 'oh yes, it is from South America. They grow them much bigger down there."
It is definately worth stopping in and seeing the space. It is small but they have done a very nice job in terms of decorations and not making it too cramped.

Does anyone know if they have a happy hour? The menu portion of the website isn't up yet.
  • JD
I like sushi so will be happy to try this place out.

Requests for Ballard (not that anybody asked): Ice cream (Wallingford's place has a line going out the door every time I drive by), Ethiopian, Soups, and a late night greasy spoon

lol - oh my font freak friends - we already had a conversation regarding this font on an early posting about O'Shan Sushi.
  • 6500, I believe that font is Papyrus.
  • nina
Is sushi the new pizza of ballard? How many more sushi places will we get?
  • 6500
I am excited about this place... Re: the Font, I think Cafe Besalu uses it too (just a couple doors down).
  • though i am not happy about yet another sushi place on top of all the other ones, i am willing to try it! if the price meets the quality, let's call it good. but that font, good grief i am so sick of that font. a nerdy thing to point out, maybe. i bet after reading this you'll notice it EVERYWHERE.

I went to O'shan last nite, and they were packed. I really liked the atmosphere and the people were really really nice. The sushi was really GRUBBIN, I eat sushi about twice a week and have been waiting for them to open as i live 2 houses away. I give them a 10+, I know for a fact i will spend alot of money there in the future.
