Phoenix is horrible unless you don't mind being forced to stay inside all the time. When I was in grade school we had to stay inside for recess at the start/end of the school year because the playground equipment was so hot you'd seriously burn yourself touching it. In third grade our science experiment was frying eggs on the merry-go-round! Of course on top of that Phoenix is just plain ugly - it's a huge sprawling mass much like LA and prime example of why laws governing development are a GOOD thing to have!!

I've been "fortunate" enough to have experienced the extremes of weather. I grew up in Phoenix and also served in the Army at Ft. Irwin (Death Valley) so I've seen extreme heat. I also attended both the Army winter survival school in Alaska and the Marine Corps winter school in the Sierra Nevada mountains so I've spent my share of time sleeping in the snow. Given a choice between extreme heat and extreme cold I'll take the cold every time. Simply put, when it gets cold out you can always put on another layer of clothing but when it gets hot out you can only take off so much!

The weather is why I live in Seattle - it never gets too hot and never gets too cold. Our idea of a snow storm or a heat wave is a joke to most other parts of the country.

This weather is 100% glorious. Perfect! Don't you all remember this past winter? Which was gorious also BTW. Or how bout last May/June? You still needed a coat. Today I rode my motocycle down from Kingston south around Hood Canal. Wow. Tank top the whole way, doing 70 and still warm. This is rare folks. Enjoy it. The cold and rain will return soon enough.

I'm happy for all of you who enjoy warm weather, but like Trix, I also will patiently wait for autumn as I kind of wilt once it gets over about 70. I think I fall into the very small bunch of people who suffer from summer SAD. According to a story I heard on KUOW several months ago, there actually are some people (myself included) who become less energetic, listless, uncomfortable, and sometimes grouchy during the summer. I'm so glad that I live in Seattle where the summer is usually mild. As a generally positive person, I'd hate to imagine what a challenging spouse I'd be if I lived in Phoenix! And by the way, the cool breeze that has kicked up in the last half an hour or so is just lovely!

I'm with you jules, I pay good money to go on vacation in places where it's 90 degrees out.

On the rare occasion where it comes to my own back yard for free you won't find me complaining.

Sigh...
I miss my basement apartment. Now I'm 3 floors up with full sun exposure. Outside, though, is actually a little better than it was yesterday. There is more of a breeze.

I''m loving my basement apartment today. Its approx 70 degrees in here right now. I used to live in phoenix for 3-4 years and i remember riding my bike home from work in 116 degrees only to get back to my apartment to learn my AC had died. That my friends was brutal.

This is warm, but nothing a shady spot and a cold beverage wont cure. Maybe some fruit salad or something from Ballard market too.

The main reason I live here is because the temp doesn't vary all that much. If there were a cooler place to live, that wouldn't have outrageous highs as well, I'd move there in a heartbeat.

I can't wait until tomorrow! If I had air conditioning, I'd be fine, but trying to sleep when it's this warm is almost impossible. Sleeping in front of a fan helps, fortunately.

One reason we suffer so much when the temperature reaches the high 80's is that most Seattle homes do not have central air conditioning. That said, we are lucky to have our wonderful marine breezes to help cool things off a bit.

People aren't used to hot weather here, so of course we tend to complain about it. Me, I'll just shut up about how hot it is now and wait patiently for Fall.
And I agree with Chopper. Please drink lots of water. It's more important than some may think.

Yes, perspective matters. I lived in DC where the highs were nothing like AZ, but there was so much humidity, it was a different kind of pain.

I would say it seems early to have such high highs, or was it just our cold start to spring that makes it more vivid?

This is why I'm so happy I live in Seattle! Sorry but 89 degrees is hardly what I'd call hot. At least not compared with places like Phoenix where the overnight LOW temperature in the summer is often over 100 and the high temperature is often over 115. Also better than Boston or NYC where temps can be in the 90's with humidity to match. Does make me snicker when Seattle natives complain about 89 being too hot - I don't think they know how good they have it!

This winter it was so cold we stopped keeping the dog on the ground floor, and moved her to the upstairs bedroom. Now it so hot up there, it would be inhumane to keep her there. Alas, after 4 years she has won, and now has full run of the house while we are away at work. At least we close the lids to all the toilets, it might be the coolest water in the house, but I don't want her drinking from there.

HOT DOG
