Sidewalk construction continues in old Ballard

Posted by Geeky Swedes on July 29th, 2009

Earlier this year, Seattle Department of Transportation crews fixed the sidewalks along Ballard Ave.

Today work continued in old Ballard as crews tore up the crooked sidewalk on NW Vernon Place between Ballard Ave and NW Leary, just across from the Olympic Athletic Club.

Bark and soil wash away, gravel less so.

Bark - many kinds if not all - is an allergy trigger and tends to contain weed seeds and runners. NPR or KUOW last weekend had a great gardening segment about invasive plants and weeds that covered some of this.
  • CW - I heard that! They said that bark can contain horsetail rhizomes, right?

yup - horsetail rhizomes. Like that stuff needs help spreading.

Does anyone know why they are putting gravel around the trees instead of bark or soil?
