I'm a fan of their store on Phinney and as the previous poster says they have stuff you won't find at any other pastry shop. Some of the Japanese influenced muffins and buns they do in house. If you haven't been, its worth a try. Ballard is the new Pastry Capital of the World!

Everybody should make a point to try something that Fresh Flours carries from Tokara Wagashi, the only ultra-traditional Japanese sweet maker of whom I'm aware in the Northwest. All of her sweets are made of permutations, in varying textures and consistencies, of a few simple but extremely high-quality ingredients (white bean, adzuki bean, rice flour, wheat flour, and occasionally seasonal flavors). Their consistency and sweetness can be an acquired taste for westerners, but eating one very slowly and savoring the subtlety of flavor (and the tangible quality of the ingredients -- I really can't say enough about that) can be a revelatory experience!

Everyone who works at Cugini is super, super, almost ridiculously nice, and the coffee is good enough, but the food always leaves much to be desired (both in selection and freshness). I always want to patronize them, but with Fiore just around the corner and Aster three blocks away, and now Fresh Flours across the street and Pauline hopefully returning someday (pretty please!), it's really hard to justify going in. :-(
