Neighborhood Service Center out of compost kits

Updated: The Ballard Neighborhood Service Center (5604 22nd Ave NW) is already out of free green kitchen kits.

Employees opened the doors at 9 a.m. to a group of people waiting to exchange their coupon for the kits and by 9:30, the center had handed out their entire allotment of 100.

Seattle Public Utilities just posted this:

Due to unprecendented popular demand, supplies of the free green kitchen kits offered by Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) were exhausted this morning.

SPU distributed 1,000 kitchen collection kits in the first two hours of the giveaway.

SPU customers can still take advantage of the “Compost Days” compost giveaway and pick up two free bags of compost with the coupon that appeared in the spring edition of the utility’s CurbWaste & Conserve newsletter.

For more details, visit www.CGCompost.com or call 1-877-SOILS-4U.

SPU apologizes for any inconvenience caused to its customers.

  1. Dude! WTF. They're out after half…an…hour! And here I was all excited about compost. Guess it's back to throwin' my trash in the street.

So are they OUT out, or just out? You'd think the city would get more than 1000 of these things lined up for the hundreds of thousands of households out there…

  2. I can't believe it! Such a bummer. I found out they were out and went to pick up some free compost at least, but when I got there, they were out too! They gave out 2000 bags of compost today.

  3. this city is always poor at planning for giveaways like this. they promote, promote and promote some more and then it's “sorry, we're out.” lame and shame.

  4. Pity that most of the budget went to promotion, apparently.
    More kits could've been available.

Oh well, better luck next time.

  5. 1000 total kits. Seriously?!?!?!?! And the city sent out how many mailers to every single household in the area? You have got to be kidding me.

  6. No kidding…and what they don't tell you is that the 1,000 kits were spread out over several SPU locations. My mother drove down to the Lake City location and they told her they were out of the 200 they were given to distribute in 15 minutes! She called to lodge a complaint and even the customer service rep was outraged. The poor guy had been getting calls from angry people all day long!

  7. It this isn't typical of Seattle Government I don't know what is (I'm not a bitter transplant, I'm a bitter life-long resident). Due to bogus info on website earlier in the week, I went out to Ballard the day before they really meant — thus, a second trip across town Friday morning (no, not on a bike, sorry).

WRITE to our green Mayor as I just did. We need better inmates running the asylum!
