Transgendered woman attacked at Ballard bus stop

4:15pm update: Prosecutors just told MyBallard that the suspect in this case, Daniel Patrick Woodward, was charged today with malicious harassment (hate crime).  Woodward already has a no bail felony warrant for escape and was previously convicted of another hate crime back in 2003.  He has been booked 36 times since 2004.

Original report: An attack at a bus stop on 15th and Market sent one person to Swedish Hospital’s emergency room.  It happened this past Sunday afternoon (5/30).  A police report obtained by MyBallard tells the story of a transgendered woman who says a stranger walked up, started yelling derogatory remarks, and then proceeded to punch the victim on the face, neck, and body.  Officers responding to the scene later caught up to the suspect a few blocks away.  Police say he appeared to be drunk and refused to answer whether he understood his Miranda rights.  The suspect, who also had an outstanding felony warrant, was booked into the King County Jail.  The attack is being investigated as a possible case of malicious harassment (hate crime).  We have calls out to the prosecutor’s office to see exactly what charges will be filed.

  1. since the suspect appeared drunk, he has to be a hobo/bum/homeless

with all the new bars that have turned downtown ballard into a drinking destination akin to pioneer square or belltown, hobos are obviously the only drunks that wander around ballard these days

  2. gobigbue, You obviously don’t realize that the other drinkers don’t wander around Ballard. They get in their cars and drive home.

  3. Since this went down at a bus stop on 15th/Market I would be very surprised if it wasn’t one of our lovely vagrants that was doing the punching. It would be like stepping in poop at a dog park and finding out that the poop didn’t come from a dog.
Everyone who jumped all over BMWL should spend a little time at that intersection.

  4. ooh and just wait ’til the Useless House opens and then the churches start filling their lots with “car campers” – add summer heat and simmer!

  5. “your ignorance is disgusting “bark more, wag less”

Really? You think felons are piling out of Matador and taking the bus home? Get real. I’ll be a nut this is one of Ballard’s new street hustling hobos.

Aren’t you all the ones convinced they’re ‘mentally ill’?

  6. jfkdlajf: According to the PI, the suspect was arrested at 14th & 54th, i.e. the P patch. The guy’s heavily intoxicated and hanging out at the bus stop and the P patch. I feel pretty confident in assuming it was a transient.

  7. “I feel pretty confident in assuming it was a transient.”

What’s a person of compassion to do? We can’t blame the differently-house man, but we certainly can’t blame the differently-shoed man!

I blame society and Bush/Cheney! Now!

  8. Look forward to more and more and more of this, Ballard bum-lovers. Just one more “peaceful” vagrant. Ballard needs as many of these creeps as we can get, so let’s build a new high-rise just for them and bus in dozens of alcoholic sex offenders from Pioneer Square. Wait, no, thats STILL not enough! Let’s set up a special welcome spot for the car camper bums, too, so we attract every scumbag for 1000 miles around.

The bums have said it themselves: Seattle is the best place in the country to be homeless, and Ballard is the best part of Seattle, the most attractive place of all, for violent, drunk felons.

Hey Ballard, how many of these creeps are enough? How many times is something like this going to have to happen before you snap out of your stupor and put two brain cells together and actually think for a moment WHY all the bums are heading for Ballard?

(Hint: it’s not for the mojitos at Matador.)

  9. “booked is different than arrested”

So getting booked 36 times makes you a valuable member of society? I must be doing something wrong.

  10. You can be arrested and not booked into jail. To be booked, you either need to be arrested or committed by the court. Being booked is definitely worse then being arrested.

  11. Wait till the drug dealers return this summer too, waiting outside the Matador to sell to the “party-people” who come to Ballard from outter reaches to get they’re drunk on!! Its gonna be disaster!

  12. Hmmm, the last few posts were deleted, mine was one after a very rude one, it must have taken mine off with it? Geeky Swedes? Glad you did though, as that one before mine was very inappropriate. I just hope the victim is ok.

  13. So if a transexual is attacked, the police come out and make an arrest, but if a regular person is attacked and you call the police, they are all “What are you bugging us for? No we will not come out.”

  14. Meet our new residents welcomed to ballard:

“Court records show he was previously convicted of malicious harassment in 2003. The following year, he was convicted of assault and a drug charge, according to court documents. In a 2007 case, police caught him with crack under the Alaskan Way Viaduct.”

Plus 36 other arrests. But I’m sure he enjoyed the company he shared on Ballard’s streets.

  15. Just wait until the Hobo Hostile is built here! Problems and altercations like this will magnify enormously. The drug dealer is already in Ballard, he hasn’t left. He’s still living in a brown van parked on 57th behind the Library…he moves it around every 2-3 days to stay in compliance with City Ordinance.
These folks living on the streets here in Ballard have no desire to better themselves nor seek help, if they did, they would have done it by now. I’ve asked the question “Why Ballard?” and the supporters of the Compass building and Church lots that are on this forum cannot/will not offer one solid reason, that is not based in THEIR religious faith that they have freely chosen but wish to force/impose on those of us who dont want this in our Community.

  16. Why does it matter if the person is transgendered or NOT? A person is a person, Black, White, gay, straight, and everything inbetween! Noting a whether someone is transgendered is not necessary information, saying it’s a hate crime is enough!

@ JIM: BTW someone who is transgendered IS a “regular” person… however after your comment, you might be a different story.

  17. 39!!!! WARRANTS FOR HIS ARREST !!!????

Prosecutors have now charged 51-year-old Daniel Patrick Woodward with malicious harassment, a hate crime.

Prosecutors say Woodward has been booked 36 times since 2004, and has had 39 warrants for his arrest. He was convicted of malicious harassment 7 years ago, along with multiple convictions of assault and property destruction.

  18. English check – getting booked is a result of getting arrested, otherwise you are being “detained” by the police. An arrest is the police taking you into custody for breaking the law and booking you is a matter of accounting for who they arrest.

The Hobo Hilton in Ballard will ruin the Ballard Core area. If it could be smaller or at least not smack in the middle of everything that would really help lessen its impact. Why does free housing rate that location? Isn’t free enough that it can be located a little farther away from a central business district? Do we feel so guilty we have to give them the best real estate available? With the condo market struggling there to even unload the inventory they have, and a bare forsaken lot at 15th and Market years away from development to welcome you to Ballard, it seems destined for a downhill slide. But I do hope I am wrong about that.

  19. BB:”Why does it matter if the person is transgendered or NOT? A person is a person, Black, White, gay, straight, and everything inbetween! Noting a whether someone is transgendered is not necessary information, saying it’s a hate crime is enough!”

In this case it mattered because it was apparently the sole reason for the attack. When you attack a member of a group solely for being a member of that group you are trying to instill fear into the group as a whole…thus the classification and stronger penalty.

  20. I love that NO ONE is talking about the victim.

Dear victim, if you are reading this, I am sorry that this happened to you. You didn’t deserve it. You did NOTHING to deserve it. I am sending you good thoughts and hope that you are recovering and that this will heal in your mind as quickly as you heal in your body.

  21. What does this say about the judicial system. This person should not have had the right to walk outside of prison property. There is such a thing called habitual violator. This same scenario happen to me at a bus stop while minding my own business but the outcome was quite different (all bite no bark) If individuals create a pattern such as being arrested as many times as this person has it is clear that they have chosen their destiny. If they are not contributing to society, working, paying taxes (the good ole’ American way) they should lose their privilege of being here in America. If they cannot abide by the rules and laws then they cannot stay here and have them deported to an Island with their same species. How come you don’t see things of this nature going on in other countries? (They don’t allow it) Don’t get caught in Singapore with bubblegum. Why does America put up with it? If they got rid of the people that cause problems then there wouldn’t be any problems. It started when the people didn’t have their bi-annual revolution to keep the Government in check. It has been brewing for over 200 years. It’s our own fault. The fact remains everyone should pull their own load and these career criminals should be ousted. You cannot go to Canada unless you bring something to the table such as some college background or technical training and speaking French only helps matters. Point being they don’t let people into their country that is not going to contribute to society. They don’t allow you (to obtain citizenship) in their country if you cannot prove to be a worthy candidate. We can learn something from them EH?
