The Market Arms opens in time for World Cup action

The Market Arms, the much-anticipated pub at the corner of NW Market St and 24th Ave NW, will officially open on Wednesday at 11:30 a.m.

The new British pub will have more than a dozen brews on tap including Boddingtons, Kronenbourg and Carlsberg. Wine and hard liquor will also be served. The menu is traditional British pub food including shepherd’s pie and fish & chips. Homemade burgers, pasta dishes and breakfast sandwiches are also on the menu.

The opening is just in time for World Cup craziness and the pub is ready. For the next month the business hours will depend on the tournament schedule. For example, they’ll show the Argentina V. Nigeria game live this Saturday morning at 7 a.m. There are five big screen TV’s and you can see at least one TV from every seat in the place including the outdoor patio in front (they checked.) If The Market Arms doesn’t have a game on, their sister pub in Fremont, the George and Dragon will be showing it. The schedule of what they’re showing can be found here, the George and Dragon TV schedule can be found here.

  1. …did you see that menu? Along with dogs, girlfriends, and babies, will someone please bring Chef Jaimie Oliver and a fresh fruit plate? Perhaps a cucumber finger sandwich?

  2. @barkmore

As opposed to what? football? played by thugs watched by thugs…
Baseball? Played by fattys and watched by fattys.

not that i have anything against them, just sayin

  3. those of you ‘haters’ and veggie lovers that posted…guess what, don’t go there…the rest of us will have more fun without you. there are plenty of fresh fruit plates and cucumber sandwiches available throughout ballard.

glad to see and welcome another business opening in ballard…best wishes to ‘the market arms.’

  4. Sounds like a great place. I can’t wait to grab a pint there. Finally a good soccer bar within walking distance. No offense to the Stepping Stone, but it just isn’t big enough

  5. “Rule 9 // Jun 8, 2010 at 5:56 pm
Too expensive for me, by about 25%
    Of course I am not a Ballard-Condo-Yuppie.”

    Sucks to be you.

  6. Yay! A new fun spot (full disclosure: a longtime Ballard non-yuppie resident saying this, so don’t get all xenophobic on me). And a nice play-park for my expat Brit soccer-fan partner. This will be fun, hope it is actually like a real English pub. Mostly.

  7. I give it six months… until some drunk walking back & forth between this place and ocho gets pegged by an impatient (car) driver trying to turn right.

  8. “As opposed to what? football?”

Oh no, American football is played by hooligans only; no one riots on the stands and fans generally do not rampage after their team has been beaten (except in Detroit of course).

  9. I dunno, looks pretty dorky. I won’t be there. Ironically, both the food AND beer in the UK (except in small far flung rural distilleries) is far worse than good old Seattle. Instead of fake British ambiance why can’t we just have real Seattle ambiance? I think I’ll just drive over to Elysian or 74th Street Ale House until Ballard can come up with something that isn’t so gimicky…..

  10. Hater – Nothing fake or gimicky about it at all. Owned by English people serving British food and beverages with local brews on tap. The G&D in Fremont has English customers that will come here in droves.

And the food in England can be fantastic, it all depends on where you go.

As for Seattle Ambiance, there’s plenty of that all round here (and its amongst the best in the world) – so what is your problem exactly, not enough portraits of the Queen, red telephone boxes and men in top hats?

  11. The George and Dragon isn’t really known for its food, you go there for the beer, imagine this new place will be the same. I can’t wait to try it, I’m a Brit, and I think it’s terrific having this place just down the road. This place will be packed, and will do very well.

  12. There’s angry, unfunny blog commenting, and then there’s Barney Stinson, who just started whining about a totally unrelated bar. Congrats Barney. You are officially bitter.

  13. And then there is Swedish G, who apparently cannot follow a thread from start to finish, so he/she opens her trap and looks like a fool.

  14. Looking forward to the beer & grub, but will they also be importing the ambiance (horrid smell) of the Fremont G&D’s men’s room?

  15. People!! Get over it! The place isn’t even open yet! It’s just a bar….most of you need to stay in your own WHINE bars. Jeez!!

  16. Bugger, the smell of wee is what makes the G&D authentic! Spend some time in pubs in London and you will see.

I went to the Market Arms tonight and thought it was great. It’s big – really big- with lots of tables and a great selection of booths. The beer list was pretty limited considering but I think I may have become spoiled.

This place is going be busy most nights of the week and packed on sunny weekends. I can’t wait!

  17. Went here last night and really liked it! The place was big, lively and packed. I don’t think it was ‘yuppie’ at all. There was a wide variety of people, all ages there last night and everyone seemed to be having a great time. Love the outdoor seating too. Thumbs up!

  18. “Typical yuppie bar.”

What’s a yuppie other than someone who makes more money than you thereby engendering your class envy?

  19. Bark: No, yuppie status has changed from rich morons to not so rich morons that pretend they have the means to be rich morons but fail miserably. Case in ponit: The Matador happy hour crowd.

  20. ” to not so rich morons ”

So they are not professionals then….cuz my 80s-shaped view of world pretty clearly remembers that’s what the ‘p’ stands for. What are we talking about at Matador, Young Urban Kinkos employees? Yukkies?

  21. sit in a bar on the most beautiful day/weekend of the year to watch a game that 55% of the time ends in a tie? no thanks, i’ll be enjoying the weather oustide

  22. No wonder everyone says that the english food is terrible. That menu is disgusting.

English fare is one thing (or pseudo-english: Heinz beans on toast), but who would trust Pesto “relish”?????

OK haters, I know I don’t have to go there or eat there, and I WON”T, just added my viewpoint.
