Cyclist pelted by BBs on 8th Ave NW

A woman says she was pelted by BBs while riding her bike in the 6300 block of 8th Ave NW. According to a police report, the cyclist was riding at 2:15 p.m. either Monday or Tuesday of last week (there is discrepancy on the date in the police report) when “she felt a sharp pain on her back and heard what sounded like a BB gun being fired. She noticed a maroon colored Toyota pick-up leaving the area. When she got home, she noticed two welts on her back, where she had obviously been hit by the pellets.” Police have no other suspect information.

  1. that happened to me a few years back between wedgewood and roosevelt h.s. someone started shooting at me in the dark from a distance, i couldn’t see them in the dark… i think they missed me but they shot like 3 or more shots one i actually saw the metal pelat whiz in front of my face… called the cops but they couldn’t find anyone… there’s a serial bb-gun roaming the streets! wear construction goggles everyone!

  2. Clearly more reason to treat trucks and SUV’s as a public health and welfare menace. Immediate banning inside the city limits!

And as always, Single Payer Healthcare, NOW!

  3. Awesome. Finally a biker who gets what they deserve!!! She failed to mention what she did to instigate being pelted by a bb gun…

  4. NO. Start paying for the bike lanes you freaky loser. Bicyclers have no right to complain about being hit when they jump out in front of cars and try to be a car. Walk, take a bus or drive a car like a normal person!!

  5. Seriously? No right to complain about getting shot? Wow. you are an idiot.

Also, just so you know, most city road infrastructure is paid for by sales and property taxes. Bicyclists are actually paying much more than their fair share.

  6. While many bikers do their share of asinine things inviting their own incidents, they have the same right of way (and rules to follow) as a car per state law. While it is tempting to inflict evil things upon bikers sometimes, in actuality nobody deserves to be shot with a BB gun.

Culturally, bikers need to own up to being responsible for some (not all) of the hostility directed at them. Running people down on the sidewalk (buzzing me next to my preschool-age daughter at speed on the sidewalk!!), purposefully blocking traffic with organized protests, running lights and stop signs, grabbing my car while sitting in traffic all don’t help their case.

In the weather we have here, I think anyone who wants to regularly ride their bike has to be a bit off to start with.

  7. “Also, just so you know, most city road infrastructure is paid for by sales and property taxes. Bicyclists are actually paying much more than their fair share. ”

blatantly, ridiculously false. Cyclists pay no gas taxes, no licensing fees, and as everyone knows take no responsibility for policing themselves or the more obnoxious elements of their community.

  8. None of which addresses the actual point — city streets mostly aren’t paid for with gas taxes or licensing fees, they’re paid for with property taxes and sales taxes. Since gasoline is exempt from sales tax, cyclists actually have a higher share of their spending subject to sales tax, one of the taxes that does pay for city streets.

  9. You “liberal” Ballardites have no problems complaining about bikes, but you look like your about to cramp your pants when you have to figure out which car goes first at a four way stop.
    Hilarious

  10. you cannot lump all bicyclists together any more than i can lump all asshat drivers together. drivers and cyclists need to show each other respect on the road. no one deserves to be treated abusively.

your comment is an ignorant one. please stay off the road.

  11. I don’t police other people on bikes any more or less than you police other people in cars. Not my job. Not yours.

Other than being wrong about how roads are paid for, what is your point?

  13. take down the plate info and call it in. the police are eager to catch this guy. they don’t need them on the street. and to think of the damage caused if they had hit her eye or something. so horrible.

  15. So how is it weird that somebody might want to ride all year? Have you ever considered another’s perspective. I moved here from Michigan where it is extremely cold so the weather here seems mild in comparison. As such, riding in the winter isn’t a big deal. Remember Paul. To each his own.

  16. I don’t hold you responsible for all the crazy things some drivers do nor should you do the same for cyclists. It’s amazing how less bitter you’d be if you started viewing people as individuals and not members of some group.

  17. Thoughtless, like “Ballardgirl”. Most people who ride bikes also drive cars.

This strategy of trying to typify, then overgeneralize about, people who ride bikes is dumb–whether you ride a bike, or sit behind the wheel of a car hoping that your anger management counseling kicks in before you kill someone or yourself.

Buying and pedaling a bike doesn’t make one any more of a member or representative of a “community” than buying and driving a car does; nor does it make one representative of all individuals who buy and ride bikes. Riding a bike does not admit one into a “culture” either.

Lastly, paying or not paying shouldn’t determine whether one “deserves” to move about the city as they please or enjoy any of the other stuff–like parks–that we manage as a public to carve out for collective use and benefit.

  18. I can’t think of anything more simple-minded, ignorant, moronic than explicitly insulting people who are trying to prevent the planet from dying.

  19. BallardGirl, maybe if you rode a bike every once in awhile you wouldn’t be chubby and cranky, thus insulting bike riders.

And I don’t even ride my bike!

  20. ” insulting people who are trying to prevent the planet from dying.”

Does that make it worse than if it was against people not helping the planet?

  21. It’d be interesting to calculate the average weight of the bike/complainers/haters versus those that bike or respect bikers. I bet there’d be a considerable difference – ha ha.

My attitude is, it doesn’t matter WHAT a cyclist does, I am in a comfort box hurtling along by the weight of my big toe. I have a little energy left to watch out for the cyclists. It is my responsibility – it comes with the driver’s license.

  22. I carry a 38 and a cell phone while riding, so after I shoot out their back window I will call the police with the license plate number.
