BHS students win at international DECA competition

The Ballard High School DECA club recently competed in the International Career Development Conference, and two students walked away with awards. The competition was held in Salt Lake City, and Soley Olafsson and Deme Xenos from BHS were each recognized for their achievements.

Olafsson competed in Quick Serve Restaurant Management Series and won two medals: one for Finalist in her event and Top Ten overall. Xenos competed in Restaurant and Food Service Management Series and won four medals: Finalist, Top Ten, Top Three and First Place. She also won a glass trophy for winning the grand award and first place. Seattle Public Schools says this is, “the first time in recent memory that a Seattle Public Schools student has earned a first place finish in this tough competitive environment and that we have had three students on the stage as finalists.” One Nathan Hale High School student also won at the competition; Mary Athapilly took home an award for Top Ten overall in Testing in the Professional Selling category.
