BHS Dance Team set to make an impact on audience and students alike

The Ballard High School Dance Team is set to put on a killer show for their 2013 Spring Dance Showcase at Earl Kelley Performing Arts Center (1418 NW 65th St) on Friday, April 26 at 7:30 p.m. The original dance show is produced and performed by BHS students under the guidance of professional dancer and choreographer Emily Lubinski.

The team formed in 2011 when Lubinski came to Ballard to create a high-level physical training and artistic development program in the high school, and recruited interested students to join the team. “Since its inception Ballard Dance has provided outstanding dance education to its students, and dynamic dance performances to its community,” said Lubinski.

Lubinski choreographs and teaches ballet, pointe, contemporary, jazz, and hip hop through the University of Washington, Dance Dimensions, and in Ballard, is the Principal Dancer for Seattle’s 127th St Dance Company.  In 2012, Lubinski was selected by the Washington State Arts Commission as a recognized Teaching Artists in our state.

Under Lubinski’s leadership the team focus on developing impeccable dance technique and aim to celebrate human emotion in their performances. In this year’s showcase, the group will entertain, inspire and challenge the audience by giving them a taste of different dance styles including lyrical dance, hip hop and comedy. “Expression through art is an integral part of development, and an imperative part of public high school education in our neighborhood,” said Lubinski.

Lubinski is passionate about inspiring students to follow their dreams. “As a professional dancer, choreographer, and certified Teaching Artist, I want to show students that they can pursue what they love – and if that’s dance, they can make that career happen for them long-term, if they are willing to train and work hard,” said Lubinski. BHS Dance Team turned this passion into competition results earlier this year when they ranked in the top 12 of over 400 public high schools at the Washington State Dance Championships.

Students in the team feel equally as passionate about their involvement as their professional coach. “It really adds to my high school experience because it’s a great way to stay involved with my high school, and make really strong friendships,” commented 2012-2013 Dance Captain and three year team member Hannah Oliason. Lieutenant Kimi Rutledge, who has been in the team for two years, echoed Oliason’s feelings. “I love the family like atmosphere and variety of dance styles. You aren’t afraid to be yourself around these girls, they’ll accept you no matter what.”

Tickets for The 2013 Spring Dance Showcase cost $10 for adults and $8 for students. Tickets can be booked online here.
