Locks to close again for saltwater drain inspection tomorrow

The Ballard Locks will be closed again for saltwater drain inspection tomorrow (July 25) for five hours, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. U.S. Navy Divers will be continuing their monthly inspection of the Locks, as they didn’t have time to finish during their scheduled inspection last week. The structure is immediately upstream of the locks and prevents salmon from entering the lock’s saltwater return intake.

Divers closed 10, 10-foot-by-6-foot doors and inspected the 30-by-60 foot curved-front, mesh screen structure at the beginning of June. The screens will be closed until mid-September.

The locks will be closed to all but emergency vessels on emergency calls during the inspection. For information on reopening, boaters can call the lockmaster on duty at 206-783-7000.
