Submarine spotted from Sunset Hill

Clamster from the My Ballard Forum emailed in a fantastic photo (below) of a submarine that she spotted as she was taking a walk in Sunset Hill on Monday.

The submarine was escorted by two Coast Guard vessels and is believed to have been making its way back to Naval Base Kitsap in Bremerton.

Thanks Clamster for sending in the photo!

  1. Can’t quite tell if that’s a boomer hump on top, or the bump from the towed array of a 688, but I’m not great at vessel type identification.
Are they doing any sub major overhauls/refueling at Bremerton these days, or just the final decommissioning work?

Reminds me of watching subs heading into and out of the Thames river in CT from the New London-Long Island ferry.

According to Wiki, this year marks the 60th anniversary of the commissioning of the first nuclear submarine, the Nautilus. If you’re ever in the New London area, it’s kept as a museum ship open to the public at the sub base there, and worth a tour (as long as you’re not claustrophobic!).
